Thanks for extensive and insightful reply, KingLeer. Such feedback from dev team is greatly appreciated.
We are planning to have more news releases and insights into our development process going forward. These sorts of communications do take time to compile, review and approve within the team, so please be patient.
Maybe you should find a PR person for a dev team? You know, the man who will make news reports, answer general questions, addressed to the devs, on the forum, and such? Just like Sky now manages the wiki without much interference from dev team, maintaining MWLL knowledge base.
We already have a PR individual (AoP) but he is on a temporary hiatus so the Lead Developers are wearing his hat for a little while. As far as an individual to manage information release in the same manner as the Wiki, the two are not directly comparable. The Wiki is a community managed feature which receives some gentle oversight from the team on occassion, but we have little direct involvement with it. Releasing development progress, new features, team status, etc. is much more involved because there is an art to choosing what is appropriate for release and the information that goes into creating those releases requires an intimate knowledge of the current team development efforts. Factors include how far along a feature is, how near we are to the next release, and the overall substance of what makes for a good news/progress update.
Why all this secrecy anyway? It's not like another modding group will steal your ideas or that you'll spoil anyone's surprise
Well, you hit upon the main reason all by yourself, but the team does have a different opinion regarding the "surprise" aspect. There is something to be said for releasing a package of updates with a glorious BANG of fanfare as opposed to trickling out small tidbits over time and then finally giving the last piece away with the release. It would be like giving you one piece of a toy car every day for a month, and on the last day you get the steering wheel. It would not be the same effect as giving you the whole gift all at once.
Also, it has been my experience that any piece of news or peek into ongoing development ends up prompting a deluge of questions (some of which can't be answered due to any number of reasons) and the inevitable "YOU MUST GIVE US NOW!!!" type threads. For these reasons, the news releases are carefully crafted to either answer as much as possible up front, and if we know when something is going to be released... hopefully head off the more demanding of those among us.
