The Planetside Reserves thing seems to work pretty well a couple years ago for Planetside, which is probably the same or worse graphically.

While I do agree with you, I know way to many people who would call MW4 "Retro", simply because it's graphics aren't comparable to today's games...
And MW4 vs WoW isn't a good comparison, while WoWs graphics are dated, they are still a lot better than MW4's and it has a somewhat cartoonish look while MW4 was more realism oriented.

On a side note, what's that MTX crap?
Let me guess, even if I were to dig out my discs next time I'm at my parent's, I'd still need it for the new Mechpak?

No.... no more MW4 discs required, I mean MW4 mercenaries, IS and CLAN Mekpak CD's.
MTX is a software used to download and install the free MW4. And Mektek uses that to share future updates of the MW4 and upcoming Mekpak4.

I didn't ask if I still needed my CDs, I assumed not, otherwise it wouldn't really be free now, would it?
What I'd like to know is, if I could even get the new Mechpak WITHOUT installing MTX if I still have my original discs.

I think that you can't get seperatly the new 3.1 mekpak. Only by using the mtx software.

I may have to take back my initial enthusiasm, as it's only Mercenaries that's being released. It also appears you can't play it without all of mektek's additional crap.

The original announcement last year said it would include the base game with all expansion packs. Somehow the priorities have changed and I can't find anything about why it did. I had been looking forward to playing the single player content of all three, but now I only get the mercenaries content, which was the least interesting of the three story-wise.

I'm also a purist. I wanted to play the game without any outside modifications (except for compatibility changes, like removal of cd check, ect.), so that I could enjoy the game as it was originally made. Instead, I have to put up with content that may look cool, but probably makes the single player content far easier to beat.

I think the talk of free mw4 was always about the mercenaries. Vengeance and Black Knight expansions will be implented in the futute updates..... if I remember correctly

The mechs and weapons that are new aren't forced on the player to use in the single player campaign. In fact you have to go looking for them in the Free Market. You can make the game easier or harder depending on the equipment purchased and used.
