And yet there is something still very pleasing to view about the MW4 Timberwolf. Yes the graphics are old but the color balance of the game was better. This is one area I have always thought MWLL was way to dark in their levels and game assets. Some of the artists on the team agree with this. MWLL could use a better artistic coordination of the mod.

Probably only because there's one "skin" right now, hopefully once they have the resources to add in some nice camo patterns there won't be much more looking back other than to say "oh mechwarrior 4, how quaint!"

Proper comparison would be to see the progression from earlier games to now.. before MWLL there was:

Mechwarrior 2:

Mechwarrior 3*:

MechCommander:

MechCommander 2:

MechWarrior 4:

MechAssault:

MechAssault 2:

MechWarrior: Living Legends:

There's a whole bunch from Assault Tech 1, Battletech: In the Shadows of Giants, Battletech Simulator, MTS (defunct) and Battlemech Hangar (pretty much dead as well) that aren't included but that's the general game progression so far.

* Trivia: A lot of people don't know but Mechwarrior 3's polygon/tri count was equivalent to MW2's for most of the terrain, mechs and vehicles. It was the mostly the animations and texturing that helped make it look much more advanced.

You forgot Mechwarrior (1).  Those 16 color EGA graphics rocked my world back in the day.  DOS based games ftw!

Would've posted a pic but couldn't find one quickly at work.

You forgot Mechwarrior (1).

Not necessary, there just was no Timberwolf in MW 1. ;)

Here's a mobygames MW screenshots page:

I'd say the only thing we're missing for the texturing are the flamboyant colors.. But then we'd be compared to MechAssault since everyone is already making a big deal about the weapon glows  8)

Well Landros you know how it goes. You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't !!!

But maybe further down the road, much further, someone can come up with a user selectable, dynamic "skinning" routine. It sure would be nice to have a procedural shader customized for MWLL vehicles. "If wishes were fishes ... we would have some fried!"

I went ahead and locked the voting since it hasn't changed too much for the last week or so.

Of those who voted:
Roughly 40% said it doesn't matter.
60% said it did, but had different opinions on the numbers.

Thanks to all that took part and voted.

It was a good thread question that got some heated responses. :D  at least this OP knew when to cut it off.

You can never cut off heated discussion!!!! We are such as a forest fire!!!! You have to smother us!!! With new beta patches!!!

Also on the more serious note, just to throw in my 2 cents, I believe that if we had this same community size for the next five years, I would still be stomping around in my Timberwolf, and to be quite honest if they called the mod finished as it is now, yeah I would be upset at the bugs but lets face it MW4 was getting old and this is kick ass and new and shiney and makes me excited to be a mechwarrior all over again, so I say its already a success because I think it is and again lets deal with the obvious here, this thread was started because I think the OP was looking for discussion that would end up thinking how he thought, and thats fine we all do that, but with this type of questions only one persons opinion matters, your own, because you are the only one who can determine for yourself whether this is a success and that you will continue to play, or that it is a failure and you are punching out.

The premise of the OP was thought provoking, if not a little inflammitory but again my opinion here is that the only opinion that matters to me is my own, and the only opinion that should matter to any of you is your own, as no one is holding a gun to your head saying that you will play MWLL.

The success of this mod will be determined by how many pilots are drawn back after patches.
