Reactor Criticals?
« on: May 12, 2010, 07:57:18 PM »
Not sure if this is the right sub forum, please move if appropriate.

Actually just a minor question: What exactly causes 'Mechs reactors to go critical in MWLL?
Is it random?
Is it a certain amount of "over-damage" to the (center)torso?
Is it the blood of the pilot clogging the tubes that supply the reactor with coolant, causing it to overheat without triggering automatic shutdown due to already fried controlling circuits in combat?

And if anyone happens to know a (probably untrue) funny answer; don't hold back.

It's just plain random as far as I know.

I don't thinks its caused by overkills against the CT because I have caused crits with a single small pulse laser.

There is a 15% chance for the Reactor to be going Critical when the asset is destroyed!

I always thought it was from damage taken from the side.   I don't think I have ever triggered one from front or rear damage - but maybe that is perception not reality.  It sure seems to happen more when I shoot into side ???  dunno.....

Did a bit of testing back in 0.1.0, got 3 crits in a row blasting a few Raven CTs with LPLs, thought destroying the CT was a surefire way to get a crit, someone said it might be the lasers, I tried again with RACs, 5 Ravens, no crit, went back to the LPLs and again no crit 5 times in a row.
So yeah, it's random ;)

TBH, as much as I love the frequency of nukes on the field as it is, I believe it would be much more fun/fair & tactical if it was related to over-damage to the CT, thus a 'mech with no side torso left and only 100points of CT armour left (a few pixels long red bar) hit by a AC20 or Gauss slug would be something like 80% certain to nuke, hit by UAC20 or 2 Gauss slugs it would be 100%.

The same scenario for a BA PoV would only really be a risk of nukes if the BA fired a MP-PPC, but the threat would be lower than with 'mech weapons, with a burst of BA SRM, BA Small Laser or BA AC2 having almost no chance to nuke the kill.

Perhaps it'd mean a lot more nukes while everyone adjusted to the new overkill nuke mechanism (the 6 FB Shiva would be a nuke making machine), but perhaps it'd add another level of tactics ie. delivering the killing stroke with mguns and medium lasers because your 30m away; or, deliberately trying to make an opponent nuke to injure his lancemates who are too tightly grouped etc.

Interesting thoughts, Heretic, but it's hard to say how much of balance issue it would be. Besides, reactors unexpectedly going nuke adds some spice to close combat.

Side torso kills should totally be legit; after all, many mechs use XL engines.

It would be cool if bigger reactors meant bigger nukes. Having a Kitfox go off in the same way as an Atlas kind of seems stupid to me :P

Excellent idea! Blast from an Atlas' reactor should be king size!

I like the effects when someones reactor goes critical but in my opinion they happen far too often it can completey screw up brawling. Its fustration to get into weapons range of a target at CQB only to watch as LRMs and gauss rounds hit it simultaniously it goes crit and fry's your brand new mech ::). Ive seen 4 go off in a row!

ofc this is only public play where people generally don't care who is in close proximity to their targets. But I would like to see the chance of it happening decreased
