No respawn mode
« on: May 18, 2010, 07:04:10 AM »
Hi Devs,

Just wondering if there are any plans of no respawn mode for the future? I'm not here to argue about the merits of respawn vs no respawn (that goes for everyone posting in this thread). I just think that there are a lot of people out there that miss this much loved style of play.

Im not going to say 'implementation would be as simple as...' because I'm well aware there is a lot more to it than the average forum goer is aware of. But I think compared to say terrain control it would probably be a lot less time consuming while pleasing a lot of people. Here are some ideas:

1) Modify existing maps to either clear or deactivate one or both bases. Put several 'drop points' around the map where one or both sides of mechs spawn. Having more than one drop point per side means greater variety per map. Drop points are either random or selected by the dropping side(s) before starting. So one base still active will mean a base assault or neither base active will be more of an open terrain battle.

2) New maps created for this mode can simply be varied terrain with again, several different possible drop points to increase variety so different chokepoints/battle areas are used.

3) Provide server hooks so that Planetary leagues can easily configure a game with drop points, mechs used per side, gametype etc.

4) Upon death a player can scroll between in cockpit views of each of his team mates.

Oh, great. I can already see it. 2 hills with 10 poptarders behind each

Yeah well i don't think poptarding is *quite* as much of a problem in MWLL. And I really dont see how it is any different a problem in respawn vs no-respawn.

More to the point - if it is still such a problem it needs to be addressed with something like in jump reticle shake which I and others have suggested numerous times.

This is a completely separate issue to what im suggesting here but thanks for sharing!

Well, nobody wants to die of course. You'll have the same problem as CS did, campers, or their MW equivalent, poptarders. People that peek over hills just enough to bring the weapon to bear that does the most damage with one shot (Hgauss currently), aswell as run for the repair bay as soon as they get hit by an MG bullet. :/
What else do you expect when exposing yourself bears such a risk?

Don't get me wrong, this game mode sounds interesting, but there needs to be a way to force people to move. Some kind of objective maybe. And maybe a round-timer CS-style, so people don't face waiting half a map when they die. I can assure you, they won't ;)

Well, people will quit and go to other host ;)

But yea, camping is the thing that might kill this mode.

What would be good is lack of repairs - so that people at least couldn't base-camp.

Other than this - I wouldn't play it.

Oh absolutely. Theres plenty more suggestions to make. I guess I was just trying to gauge if the devs had any slight intention of getting on to this at some point.

I mean lets face it the devs have already conquered many of the issues present in the licensed mechwarrior series so im sure they can do the same with this gamemode. I just dont want people with previous experience of no respawn to assume there will be all the previous problems.

Taking the hard line and banning any form of external view whilst playing already shows us they have the right idea of how to make a game thats not full of cheese.

But yea, camping is the thing that might kill this mode.

There are definitely objective based styles that can prevent camping. Base raid/assault, time limit. If counterstrike can do it then surely this mod can.

Obviously in a planetary league scenario an attacking team would lose if they failed to achieve the objective in a given time limit.

If one team gets to camp then they can be balanced out another way - less tonnage/cbills to play with for example.

What would be good is lack of repairs - so that people at least couldn't base-camp.
Yeah repairs in no respawn seem very far fetched. To be honest I think they need more implications in existing gamemodes, such as a limited amount of 'components' available for repair that can only be replenished by venturing out to certain points on the map, or something along those lines.

it does work in CS or Soldat or whatever shooter because out there to get to the opponent you need ~15 seconds - here it's at least one minute ;)

For me this mode would be great for clans trainings and scrims - where people would learn how to survive but not basecamp all the game.

But if it's going to have objectives than I'd prefer normal objective-based gameplay. Without no-respawn feature.

I'd vote for this kind of game mode.

We use a no respawn game format for most of our clan matches atm, and find them the most enjoyable.

We are not yet planning on doing a gamemode exactly like you described, but lets wait for the next patch, it may satisfy you.
There comes a point where the talking must stop, and people have to do actual work.

And there it is again, a dev lighting our so dark sky with a " It's "done", wait for the next patch"
In the name of bullet, the next patch can't come too soon !

As for the original idea , I like it too.
There is a extremely fun potential in no respawn game mode. And the adrenaline rush during battle, would be quite higher.

Agreed.  Our no respawn scrimmages are a crapload of fun.

Blurr, note that your no respawn scrimmages are against people working together.

But you could do a CS style no respawn and make it the same as CS.

IE 5 minute rounds, and after each round people get money and they can get a new mech.

etc... etc...

This would certainly increase the intensity of specific fights.
I hate Aircraft in this game, if I die from one, I leave.  I wish I could just fire back at them from a Mech.

I hear ya man.  But I've preferred no respawn from CS, to R6:Ravenshield, to MW4.  Anygame that leans more towards realism than arcade is good for no respawn imo.  I also learn a lot by watching other players after I die.

But that's precisely my point buzz. There is a whole other group of players out there who may well not even begin to take the mod seriously (or care about its numerous other good points) until something like this is implemented. Think about the franchise and its long history... I alone know 4 people who I've told about the mod but wont really take any interest until if and when it has something like this. And to be honest my interest in the mod flagged a while ago due to current game modes.

I do hope what the next patch brings will kick up my interest a bit again (though im not sure free-for-all will do it) but I cant imagine true lasting appeal without some sort of no-respawn league type play.
