At some point, I started to like Extremity
« on: May 23, 2010, 04:03:56 AM »
I used to hate Extremity... the eye-gouging colour, the low-gravity dynamic, the rat-run of narrow canyons.   I used to hate it so much I'd log off every time it popped up in the map rotation.

But now, it's one of my favourite maps.   I'm not sure why I changed my mind... perhaps the variety that it offers vs the other maps, the way it turns poptarters into popfloaters, the clever "hot v cold" dynamics, and the number of rocketpack BAs I get to swat along the way.

It was a useful lesson for me in how an aspect of game can seem bad at first, but once you get used to it, can actually be quite interesting.

So, I salute the devs for the low-grav hot-cold concept, and this map in general.

I've always enjoyed this map so long as I'm not being swarmed by BA with flight packs. Though I do end up just dedicating myself to their deaths.  ;D Only gripe I've ever had is how the nova clouds in the background completely white out the night vision.

Extremity is the best overall improvement to a map. I liked it within minutes and still do.

Honestly it's not my favorite if only for one reason: the colors are so damned light that they make half my HUD invisible! It's the same with the sky on Sandblasted.

I like it cause it requires pretty high skill as a BA to operate on and it forces mech only jokes to realize that if you can't hit a BA at 400m paces you're just gonna be in a for a whole game of hurt.

I will like it much, much more once visual tweaks are done to it. Right now its sorta eye rape.

Always liked this map - definitely one of my favourites.  BA vs BA is absolutely amazing on it - the minigun comes into its own.

I find it the easiest of the maps on which to splat BA.

It tends to wreck my framerate for some reason especially when zoomed and scanning

I like Extremity.
It's a great feeling to fly around for minutes without touching the ground even once, while raining death upon enemy mechs from above, or toasting mechs while the sun is on the horizon ;D
But unfortunally, for some reason, sometimes units further then maybe 300m away become invisible, making it impossible to fight BA or even mechs and tanks sometimes  :(

Oh, and it is the only map where you can rape airbourne VTOL and ASF with the BearAC on a regular basis  ;D ;D ;D

It certainly has had a wild development cycle, no one seemingly being able to agree on how it should play (or look).

I first started on it about 1.5 years ago, after it was already (mostly) completed by a level designer that stopped working on the team before I joined. Problem with that initial version of extremity was that it was just too small.  Only about 1-1.5 K between the two bases.

I reworked it to make it play better and be much larger with the current "3 crater" system you see today. However my version I developed had a lot of incomplete assets and white-boxed "drafts" of where things would go. Problem was Extremity was the kind of map that required specific stuff art wise to be made for it, and artists were generally something we were always short on. It was also rather open... a problem solved by these old assets and buildings.

But these old assets made for extremity were all really old, outdated, and generally not made right. As such, these "problem" assets were eventually removed from the mod (among many others that were never going to get complete and made by people no longer on the team). And I needed even more new assets, so needless to say the map I had designed was suddenly blank with assets and no way really fix it short of waiting for new ones or another redesign.

Within the last few months of it's development Kami kind of took a hold of the map and made drastic changes to it. Sadly the result was muddied and due to a lack of any assets at all for the map, it suffered more than helped from his changes he made.

But really not much could have been done about it. It was a map that IMO should not have been released until we had the ability to -do- something with it art and design wise. The good news is that it's a beta, and soon the map is going to be getting the TLC that it needs to really shine beyond just an awkwardly designed rock landmass with a cool skybox.

KorJax , Thanks for the inside scoop. I didn't realize that all of this was so long in the making.  :o And thanks to you and Kami for your hard work on this. I can't wait for any improvements ya'll may have in mind.  :D
