2) I guess you are talking about the SJ guys.
Clan Smoke Jaguar is a faction in Battletech/Mechwarrior, and since these guys want to represent them they use their rank insignia as pics.

What child forum from a parent game doesn't have people using related avatars? It's all about getting people into the spirit of things. It'd just be silly if the forum was filled with say Beavis and Butthead imagery. A mech cockpit icon with Butthead at the wheel might be creative though.
