"Change weapon mode" button
« on: June 14, 2010, 07:36:35 PM »
Many weapons in BTU have different fire modes, can alternate their rate of fire, or have something similar.
We could have a "change weapon mode" button that changes the selected weapon (or even the whole selected weapon group) into its alternate firing mode.
Examples for fireing modes:

RAC: Usually it fires in 6x mode, when the weapon mode is changed is slows down to 4x, additionally lowering generated weapon heat.
This way its ammo lasts 1/3 longer and it can fire even longer until it overheats, but at the same time deals considerably less damage.

Flamer: Toggle between a low spread/high range and a high spread/low range mode.

MRM/SSRM: Turn crosshair following on/off

LRM: Activate indirect fire mode. In this mode LRM fire like a LT, not onto a specivic target, but at an area in a certain distance. Of course the crosshair changes to something similar to the one LT use. In this mode you can not lock on, and LRM ignore TAG/NARC.

Many of the level 2.5 or level 3 weapons also have modes that would be profiting from this. (just for the case that we will get them someday)

PPC with attached capacitor: Turn capacitor on/off; alternative: abort charging.

MML: Change SRM and LRM mode.

There are some more, but you get the idea  ;D

Toggling to passive radar does this already

Nope, it doesn't. -> Like the longtom, that you get displayed at which range the missiles will hit. You should be able to set your missiles (by torso elevation) -for example- to hit at 670m even if you don't have a line of sight to the target because of the terrain.

oh i get it now, sorry thought you meant same thing as dumbfire.

I doubt it would be useful at all unless Thunder munitions were implemented as well so a saturation technique would actually do something useful.

With a C3 unit somewhere up front, it could be very useful already to target LTs, Gauss poptarters or LRM boats in cover.
See a contact that doesn't move? Switch to artillery mode and convince them to leave their hiding place ;)

Indirect fire LRMs like LT's would be outstanding. It'd allow LRM users to hit people hiding behind hills.

Nice idea, though I'd prefer switchable ammunition types first.

So I could eventually saturate the area with Infernos ;D 8)

The missile idea sounds great me thinks.
