How much is the Mech crouching?
« on: June 18, 2010, 04:36:05 AM »
The view seems to suggest it isnt very much, Im curious to know weither its crouching significantly more when observed from outside the mech...if so, how much?

umm nope, the amount of crouching seen in the cockpit is the same as the actual distanced lowered.  The distance a mech can crouch varies with each chassis, but in general is higher in the humanoid mechs and less so in the inverted leg mechs.

I was just about able to fully hide my uziel behind a hill crouched, then uncrouch and shoot.  I'm sure a little was sticking up, but it sure lowered my profile.

Your missile lock time also dramaticly decreases when your crouched.

Yea, it's cut by half. Huge difference.

It's probably even less than half. Crouched boats don't need to worry about locking on at all - even ECM mechs only take slightly longer than in 0.2 :-\

Whats with the face haarp? Is having to come to a complete stop and crouch (making moving an even slower proposition than from just a stop,) not good enough for ya? LRMs are a pain in the ass to use now and don't do much except in overkill enmasse. Why the hate haarp? why the hate?  :(
Btw, LRM5 refire is still retardedly slow, see my sig.

Mech crouch is more about reduced lock time and AA posture than minimizing profile

AFAIK it's exactly half ;)

Yep. Exactly. The cost of it however is quite obvious - you are an easier pray when surprised by the enemy. Not even saying about Fbombs or LRMs dumb-fired out of your lock-on range.

Because LRMs still go for the torso only, small hills don't work anymore as cover due to their higher arc and they do even more damage than before. So having someone behind their own lines spamming LRMs when crouched is even more annoying.
That, and crouching makes almost no difference in mobility. It takes how long, 2 seconds to get up?

LRMs would be completely fine for me if their spread was increased so they also hit arms/legs or even some LRMs hitting nothing on a stationary target. I would even be ok with more damage if they worked that way.

You can twist your mech yourself to distribute the damage.  LRMs have so much against them with AMS, longer lock on times, and using cover to block them that spreading the damage even more than it is now would effectively kill them as a weapon imo.

This.

And while it does take 2 seconds to get up HAARP, you then have to accelerate away which can take another couple seconds till you're really moving, that is a long window for someone who is good with direct fire weapons to pound you and the only Missile boat that really has nice armor is the Catapult, something like an Owens, Cougar, Puma, or even Vulture can get banged up bad by an alpha of some ERPPCs or Gauss, add some lasers to that and you will need to go back to base for repairs while you only got a couple salvos away. That also counts for precious seconds when being strafed by an aircraft going in for a boat kill.

most of this is in pro tips just have to slog through it.  Some other stuff is players doing their own test experimentation
