New PC Build
« on: June 23, 2010, 06:53:23 AM »
Well, I'm finally tired of putting up with my current PC's shit so I've decided it's time to build a new one. The general budget I've been working with has been around $3000-$3500. ( Yes I know, "OMG WTF LOL You don't need that much")

But anyways these are the base parts I've been looking at for building the unit myself:
Case

PSU

Mother Board

RAM

CPU
I was also considering the i7-975x

GPU for single set up
For dual

CPU cooler

Main HDD
I've also considered a small SSD for the main.

There are some other components I've looked at, but this covers the major ones I think.

build looks good in general, acouple things you might want to consider though-

CPU- why spend $1000 on a extreme edition. Personally, I'd buy a I7 930 and OC it to match or beat the speeds of the 980. If you want to 980 because it's a 6 core CPU, why not go AMD and get one of thier $300 6 core CPUs

GPU- What size monitor are you running? I run a 1920*1200 24" widescreen with a single 5870. Playing the 2.0 beta(havent played 3.0 yet), my FPS counter would stay between 40-50 fps, all settings on very high.

PSU- If you go with ATI for GPU, or just go with one fermi chip, you don't need anywhere near 1000 watts. That Antec is priced very nicely, but you could save $50 by getting a 750 watt corsair PSU. I know my current rig(q9650 OC'ed to 3.6ghz/4gigs ddr2 800 ram/5870) doesn't even come close to pushing my 860 watt PC Power and Cooling PSU.

Can you list the parts rather than just giving a bunch of unlabeled links? Sorry, not gonna click em all and try to remember what the parts are.

How do you get 40-50dps with a 5870? I have 5970 and barley get that kind of fps, max settings Dx10 X64.

And hes right I have a 850Watt Psu with 5970, and it's not even close to pushing the PSU to max. Could probably run another 5970 on it.

Never ever spend 1k+ on a CPu when you can  spend 1/4 of the amount if not less, and then OC it to be just as fast. Far far cheaper on the pocket, and lets you have enough money for another GC :D Or monitors!!

You can use an SSD as your main drive for windows etc, Like I have. But it's very expencive way to make your PC a bit quicker at installing, moving files, and loading windows :D Only for the die hard, or super rich people :D

Agree 100%.  With a proper heatsink I have finally OC'd my 920 from 2.67 to a mere 3.2Ghz, but I've noticed a HUGE difference in perfomance in this mod and my rig in general even at that speed.

Eh, I'm not too certain about OC'ing as I have no experience with it. And as for the AMD 6 cores the reviews I've looked at show their performance to be lower than even the regular i7 in most cases.

And if you spend tons in water cooling you can run it at 4.3ghz like me ^^ Of course thats pointless for Crysis but I do play other games where it is useful ^^ i920 is overclocking madness XD

Lol, I wish I had $ for water cooling, though I'd start with my GPU since it's the loudest part of my system.  That's an insane overclock by the way, what games actually need that?

why waste tons on overclocking, besides when overclocking this far the only things that needs this kind of speeds are the wii/p2 emulators and rendering/encoding programs.

i5 750 oc using a corsair h50 cooler.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181010&Tpk=corsair%20h50

that's $79.99 + $199.99 = ~279$

less then the 6 core AMD but with much more processing power.

And considering that the ram and motherboard you've chosen is way better then mine you should have no problem reaching a higher overclock if you get a better water cooling then me.

the H50 I've chosen cools slightly under the top air coolers. But as a bonus i don't have to put a friggin huge 1kg fan on top of my CPU.

There's no harm in the average person doing a light overclock. The only people who push their clocks to the far end are the ones who want to see what happens.

;__; anybody got a C0 E8**** for sale?

I did it because I can? Becuase I wanted to? Not everyone wants a slow ass PC.....

You don't have to spend tons on watercooling to get it that high, I just did becuase I wanted to push it to the limit, and unluckily for me, even with the good stepping, my CPU sucksss. There is no way MY cpu would go that high on cheap watercooling or air, while others haVe got theirs higher on just air. It's down to luck of the draw with intel CPUs...

And any game that is heavily demanding on the CPU DOES benifit from it! Other than Crysis I have yet to find a game I cannot max settings and run at 1900x1200 and get smooth as silk FPS. Games like Arma2 is heaily demanding on your CPU where a faster CPU does help. Also any RTS game where there are hunderds and hundreds of units on the screen at once, can get very CPU demanding. COH for example is CPU hogger when you are playing with 5 CPU and yourself!. That's not to say having a £500 GPU isn't more important mind you, but there is no point having one without the other.

Anyway back on subject, You can buy any cheaper i7 etc and just overclock it to just over 3ghz easily, even with stock heat sink (Not reccommended but possible) saving your self hundreds and hundreds of pounds for a few hours work. Basicallly and not trying to be horrible here, only lazy people buy the stupidly expencive alredy high clocked CPU, with more money than sence XD And I used to be just like that, but I changed!

Google is your friends, read up on it, and you will relise it's maybe not as hard as you thought.

Oh any my GPU is pretty loud, alas super powerful GPU do get loud when stressed....However I have read that the new Nvidia graphic cards they have just released are super quiet, so if you want a dead quiet GPU I would concider those.

Well, if I choose to OC from what I've read a Bloomfield chip would be easier to OC. So would the Intel Core i7-930 be a better overall choice for a replacement? It would definitely free up some more money for a SSD or another GPU.

the 930 is more than capable of doing anything you need it to do and does it very fast.
