Light Gauss Really Weak?
« on: June 25, 2010, 05:14:27 PM »
I took the 2 gauss Uziel for a spin a short while ago on Clearcut, went passive radar, and got an eagles view of an enemy Partisan raining damage on friendlies. I started plinking him with dual light gauss. Since I was way beyond 500 meters and in passive radar mode, I never did get to see how much damage I ultimately inflicted. However, the Partisan was sitting still and every shot landed along with the appropriate C-bill reward. I fired 5 salvos for a total of 10 light gauss rounds to the same spot, during which he never did bother to move or otherwise react. Finally, he crept away back to his hangar to fix up and/ or resupply and I never did kill him. Truthfully I was feeling kinda ignored.  :-[

Well they're more for dislodging (ie spooking off) LRM and artillery assets than for out right destroying them.

They more than make up for the mediocre damage with a huge range and v good rat of fire.

Ive got quite a few kills with them on other medium and light mechs, and have legged heavies at range for them.

My only advice is to select you targeted area to be something other than whats mostly armoured, so weapon pods, legs, all are good targets. As for tanks.. well just keep up the sustained rof. Light gauss DOES force me off hills when im using lrms, and without me and others being on the hills on frostbite, you have a much higher chance of dodging volley of lrms  :D

New idea- would I be able to use an external hard drive to add RAM and/or improve gigahertz?

They are weak. It is best to stay at range and use them to support your brawlers thus adding a little damage and stealing a kill once in a while. As someone else said they tend to make LRM boats move to cover. Not because they are in any danger of being destroyed but more because they know they have been spotted and for those guys in is their nature to want to stay out of the crosshairs.

That Uziel variant would be so much better with one light gauss and one erppc.

You ll be surprised how much damage you can do on a light with those things. They are really good for sniping arms and legs off at range.

This new patch. 0.3.0 and 0.3.1 included more armor relative to weapon damage.

There should be no suprise that solo sniping is not very effective. This version is all about combined arms and focus fire.

If you want to snipe away LRM boats or partisans from 1000-1200m, bring friends on Teamspeak and coordinate.

Use light Gauss against light mechs, lightly armored medium mechs, (Holl,Uziel) and a even the Vulture.
Or against aircraft and Har. DO NOT use them on anything else and particularly not tanks as they will do complete garbage damage to them and at that point in the game you should be taking heavier weapons and allowing yourself to get a bit closer as in theory teammates should have some large anchor mechs to distract the enemy.
If you need to destroy tanks at range LRM is great for that.

If you actually want to damage tanks, use LRMs. Their pinpoint accuracy and very high damage in addition to tanks limited mobility makes scrap metal out of them.

LTGauss rock at taking out arms/shoulder pods/cockpits.
Especially since they've got a range of 1200m, there's only two other weapons I can think of right now that have comparable range, ELRMs(1500m) and AC2's(1200m).
So even if you're detected (the blue trail usually gives you away ;) ), most assets won't be able to effectively return fire unless they close the distance.
And on the way they might lose an arm and run into a few of your teammates ;D

No it doesn't do all that much damage per shot, but it's huge range, high accuracy (once you get a feel for the lead) and rather cheap price more than justify it imho.

/signed.

Edit: If the enemy is 'close' enough (=closer than 1000m) to return fire (except with ELRM and U/AC-2) than you made something wrong.

I absolutely love the 2xLight Gauss Uziel. Ridiculous range and a great rate of fire. I like to sit way back and pick off missile packs, arms, and occasionally a leg.

I dunno if I can agree with the LtGauss being weak. I was using the LtGauss Harasser earlier and was finding that it only took 1 or 2 shots to take a mech's L and R torso down to nothing.

which mech?  Cause I typically go lt gauss harasser up to the uziel with a pair of em, and there are very few mechs that I notice any substantial damage at once.

I believe it was a Hollander. I remember hitting him while he was moving and seeing his L-Torso suddenly go from green to orange to red to black.
