Steam or Disk?
« on: June 28, 2010, 04:44:04 AM »
A while ago I noticed this mod and thought it was perfect!
I tried playing Mechwarrior 3 but my computer would crash to desktop every 20 minutes :'( so it wasn't as enjoyable as I hoped considering it took me nearly a week of constant playing to finally beat it :o. It was still really enjoyable though ;D.
So when I saw that a Mechwarrior game that might consistently work on my computer was available for download, I thought it was perfect. I have just upgraded my computer so it can handle Crysis, But I'm not sure if i should buy it off of steam or Just get it on disk. Are there any differences(advantages/disadvantages) between the two versions?
Thanx for the help!

Get the disc. This way you actually OWN the game and Valve being asshats or hackers can't steal it.
Both will work fine with MWLL though!

Disc. Any time of a day or night.
Especially when you can get disc on the same price (or if you'll get lucky: even cheaper) than a virtual copy.

Disk unless you have a tendency to lose disks, thats where Steam comes in handy since you won't need to put a disk in to play every time

I happen to own both. Originally I had the disc, however the copy protection gave my DVD drive fits. It would sometimes take over a minute to launch the game as the drive tried to read the disc. So now I own the steam version.

Another side note, the steam version does not have the 64 bit executable. So if you want to run Crysis in 64 bit, you MUST buy the Disc version.  I have tried MW:LL in both 64 and 32 and have not noticed any difference, but your results may differ.

I have a disk copy, and sometimes it takes over 10 minutes for me to get into the game because somehow it sees my fully legitimate crysis disk as an illegal copy. Very annoying. I think I prefer a disk over a steam copy, but sometimes you're able to get some good deals on steam (like I got Warhead for $10), and it's nice to not have to fish around for a disk every time you want to play.

Well, I'm one of those people who loses/scratches the hell out of all their game discs, so I went with the Steam copy.  As long as you have a decent internet connection, I don't see how the Steam version is any worse than the disc version.  I don't understand how you think Valve or some "hacker" would "steal" your electronic copy of a game.  They might dupe your serial or something, which is just as likely to happen with a disc version, I would think, in which case you can contact Steam support who can see that you paid for the game and take steps to correct the situation.  If someone dupes your serial when you have a disc copy, what do you do?  Wait for Crytek or EA to help over the phone or through snailmail?

QFT.

It got to the point where i had so many manuls and disks and boxes things were just getting lost or broke, i now buy the majority of games on steam. I like steam alot, for the other things it provides, and i know im not going to have any problems when it comes to RUNNING the disk itself.

New idea- would I be able to use an external hard drive to add RAM and/or improve gigahertz?

Use 32-bit then. There is no difference, other than 32-bit seems more stable :P

Hacker/Phisher steals Steam account -> All your precious games gone or a huge hassle to get back.
Your country outlaws "killer games" or wants to censor them or you were falsely accused of cheating by VAC or any other reason Valve considers valid -> Pull the plug on your account.

You don't OWN anything on there. Amazon's Kindle showed that not owning stuff is retarded and opens up a new whole new world of possibilities. Guess what happened? The publisher of the '1984' complained that they didn't want their book published as eBook. What did Amazon do? Remove all purchased copies from all Kindles. That's the power Valve has aswell. It is horrifying, and I experienced it first hand.

Of course, there is little difference between Valve pulling the game from you, and EA/Gamespy disconnecting the login server. So I have no preference between disc or Steam.

If its a single player only game, Disc all the way. Nothing pisses me off more than a game that I will only play single player requires Steam or any other on-line activation at install. Since one day that authentication server will go offline.

Just apply a crack. Why do people even put up with this shit?

Some cracks have trojans that will steal your CD-Key (if not an outright virus). If its a single player game, it does not matter. But getting your multi-player key stolen is bad news all around. Ironically, I have personally had more keys stolen by EBGames/Gamestop employees* than know people who lost their MP key to a cracked .exe.

*Thanks to their policy of opening the PC game and keeping the disc behind the desk to prevent theft. Some employees will copy down the CD-Key for fun and profit.
