How do I start into Battletech?

How do I get into the board game that uses miniatures? But not paper. 

I got laughed at by my fellow 1FSAC because I just happened to have bought alot of Mechwarrior Dark Ages miniatures when I saw them come out. :\

I'm sorry guys I didn't know that it was nooby to get those.

I'd imagine it is getting harder and harder to find get together for the classic BT, but I know there is at least one  BT program for download online that uses most of the board game rules called Megamek I think.

Well actualy my family is wanting to play it, so player wise, I have enough. It's just where to get the miniatures.

Best way to get into the game is through the Introductory boxed set.
The Boxed Set

It has the intro rules, plastic minis, and maps.

Unfortunately it has gone out of print, and the publisher has been having troubles getting the next version published. But there should be a new printing sometime "soon".

If you cannot find that, then you can buy minis from Iron Wind Metals or ebay, and get the free introductory rules from http://www.classicbattletech.com.

I prefer playing face-to-face with minis .... much more fun like that

I remember playing with my brother and he was proud to get the Marauder and I made head-shot with Warhammer PPC in first round of playing and pilot got killed

MegaMek is a lot of fun and all, but my problem with it compared to tabletop is the fact that everyone declares his movements and attacks and only at the end of the round will you get a summary of what happened. The table-top is more instantaneous in that regard.

Technically you are supposed to declare all attacks before any of them are resolved. But I agree its more fun to play where you resolve the attack as soon as you declare it. You just lose some of the excitement when everything that happens is shown in large printout at the end.

Make no mistake I miss playing the board game, there's no replacement for that. But with megamek at least you don't have to go out and buy all the stuff until you know you have people to play with.

Also just to relate a story, a few months ago my family had to take a day and a half road trip, so my little brother and I loaded it up on two netbooks and played a network game right there in the car. It was quite a bit of fun since there was certainly no room for the full board game there in the back seat.

I have a binary of Smoke Jaguar Warriors and working on my Trinary...yeah they are metal...anywhere from 8-15 bucks a pop depending on the mech

  I know, I was just saying that I had no idea it was a nooby move to get those things. I like them as a desk thing. I just have them spread out and stuff, but damn, I have alot of Koshi'!!!!!!!!!!

But I have a cool looking Federated Suns attack group. 

I got a gazillion of them too. I got a Fedsuns Hatchetman and Uziel adorning my desk right now. The good news is you can use them to play Classic Battletech! Lots of people do. Just use 2 inch hexes (or use the Battletech Miniatures rules) instead of 1 inch and you are good to go!
