I'm in need of some flying lessons.
« on: June 30, 2010, 02:22:41 PM »
I wanted to start playing around with the air craft but i'm having problems flipping upside down and crashing. I've been told during gameplay that i'm just supposed to point in the direction i want to go and hit the throttle. But when i do that i go about 50 feet in the right direction and then i flip upside down and crash. I've been told that this is normal for someone who doesn't have experience flying aircraft in MWLL

Anybody know if there's a post on this site or youtube tutorial that can tell me how to fly these things? I'm still looking but if someone can point me in the right direction or just tell me that would be great.

Thx,

If you're flying using a mouse and keyboard, it's going to take a while to get used to the controls. Aeros, especially the starting Sparrowhawks, are very sensitive with M/K controls. It takes a light touch. If you're going in for an attack, don't drop your throttle below 40%, or you will start to drop from the sky like a rock. Due to a weird issue with the Crysis physics engine, Aeros don't have momentum, so you can't coast towards your target.

If you have a joystick, I suggest using that to fly. A few minutes tweaking the joystick settings in the included action mapper is all it takes, you'll find a setting you like after not too long.

As we are on the subject, I'm having control problems of a slightly different sort.

I set both x- and y-axis turning to mouse and rolling to keyboard to make aiming easier, but every time I move my mouse in the x-axis even a little bit in any direction, the aero just keeps on turning till the end of time. It shouldn't be a mouse sensitivity problem because it's set quite low in both control panel and in Crysis.

You mean yaw?
You have to use v_rotateyaw to map the the mouse to yaw. You are using the action designed for gamepads.
You have to insert this into the aero section of your actionmap.
Code: [Select]
<action name="v_rotateyaw">
   <key name="maxis_x"/>
  </action>
Unfortunately yaw on the x-axis is inverted so moving the mouse left moves the aero right and vice versa

my tip is to take off at 60-70% (use the numpad 6 and 7 respectively)  this will give you more time to pull up off the run way before smashing into the landscape.

Once air born just stay around the same speed to get used to the controls.

definitely do not try to learn to fly in the Sparrowhawk, that thing is incredibly fast and twitchy. Try a Sulla instead.

The Hawk is certainly twitchy...it took a while for me to line shots against hovering VTOLs.  But even with the twitchiness, I cant say its more maneuverable than the other aeros...it seems they all have the same, or very similar turning radius/rates of turn.

It sounds like the only thing that should get a Hawk off a Sulla or Shiva's ass, is an opposing Hawk tickling his tail feathers.

I nearly choked to death on my cornflakes.

The hawk can turn on a pinhead, so hard it can do a 180 degree flip and instabone itself after the power has been on for less than 5 seconds, if you dont take off carefully.

New idea- would I be able to use an external hard drive to add RAM and/or improve gigahertz?

Yeah, finally figured out how to fly. Now i just got to work on not crashing into friendly aircraft when we're both chasing one plane, lol.

Found out that the trick with vtols is that you got to 'tilt' the aircraft in the direction you want to go kind of like a helicopter.  8)

I still want my dumbfired Tbolts to obliterate other aircraft... I always do it, knowing its not (usually) going to kill them, but there is a certain gratification to actually hitting them w/ tbolt... I want mid-air nuke explosion kills dammit!   8)

IF you wanna fly aeros in MWLL, I strongly recommend using a joystick.
I tried with mouse and keyboard once, and there is no way whatsoever that I'm gonna do that again.
I'll just stick my my X52 and, pop a few shots in the direction of Pyro here :P

Been in dogfights with others ingame and you just cant beat good old joystick controls.
Think I have come across a couple mouse and keyboard users in aeros, and they dont fly nearly as good as those using joysticks.
Its just a whole different way of controling the craft, you feel more like youre actually fying it rather than playing a game.

Yeah, i agree. I used to own an X52 but i had problems with the rudder controls uncalibrating itself all the time and ended up taking it back for a refund because my torso on my mech during MW4mercs kept forcing my mech to turn it's torso all the way left. The thing ended up being a paper weight as i went back to keyboard and mouse. I'll save up some money and get another X52 to see if Saitek solved that problem yet.
