What do you set out to achieve during a game of MWLL?
« on: June 30, 2010, 02:48:20 PM »
What do you aim to achieve during a game of MWLL?   What result makes you feel satisfied that you've "played well"?

I like to play MWLL as if it's a sim.    For me, a "good game" is one where I've achieved a large number of kills and damage, and haven't died.   To me, that constitutes "success".    Of course I get bonus happiness if if I can help my team win, give cash to fellow fighters who need it, swat BAs off teammates who need assistance, and so on.

I think my personal approach to the game puts me at a bit of a disadvantage from an official scoreboard point of view.  I'll always RTB to re-arm and repair,  rather than let my mech get trashed.    I'll also eject and fight on as a BA, rather than let myself be killed and respawn.     I think I'd probably end up higher on the official leaderboard if I was prepared to charge in, deal damage,  die, and respawn frequently.    But that's my choice, so it's all good.

Anyway, that's my approach.   What's yours...?    What's your personal goal while playing?    What result satisfies you that you've "played a good game"...?

Typically, I like consider it to be a "good round" when I've managed to get promoted to the point of being able to afford a Heavy mech of my choice, or (preferably) a Shiva. I don't really care about my kill/death ratio too much...I'll go back to base to rearm and repair, sure, but I absolutely REFUSE to eject from my mech in the midst of battle like every other BA douchebag. I think it serves absolutely no purpose, it just makes you run around and annoy people, while denying them a kill from the mech they just spent all that ammo destroying. Every round I play, 9/10 people will eject from their mechs, making you hunt them down because apparently they've got nothing better to do than be annoying little jerks.

If I'm feeling frisky, I'll be dedicated AA for the round with a RAC2 Partisan, and later a UAC2/5 Huit. Very satisfying. It also lets me hunt down BAs even easier. I hate them so much  >:(

"Mr. Churchill, you're drunk!"

SCIENCE!

If I am not the last ranked guy I could call it a win ;)

I want "good fights". A game where my team dominates is often, in my mind, a worse game then one where my team IS dominated. I get more good fights that way. But the best matches are those with balanced teams where both push the battle-lines back and forth and there is little to no time wasted waiting around for opponents or team-mates to leave the base.

I, like Virt, like to see this a bit as a sim in the aspect that I do not like to die. I always strive to survive, but I also love flanking and pushing ahead with a fast mech to disrupt the enemy lines. Thus death is unavoidable at times, but most often I try until the end to survive. Only times I budge from this is when getting legged (or otherwise have my mech disabled) very far from my base and have no money to purchase anything new. Then I just do what I can as a BA until someone decides to swat me like an armoured fly.

A good game is a game where I have felt I could cooperate with team-mates (not necessarily even typing to them, but just people wait up a bit for each-other and move intelligently during engagements to support each-other) to help turn the tide of battle back and forth. A good game is where I have returned to base for repairs multiple times with the damage display being a study of of red hues.

A good game often, but not necessarily, has me placed near the top of the scoring board but on the losing team (with a slight marginal).

/Merf - LOVE seeing friendlies move in to support and draw fire, allowing a halfdamaged mech to turn around and keep fighting wihout getting destroyed.

Yeah, like you, I occasionally dedicate an entire round to just playing AA.

And isn't it worth it!   I love that huge sense of satisfaction when, after pounding away at an Aero for minutes with overheating AC2/5s, you finally manage to inflict such damage on them (ie turn their armour a yellowish shade of green) that the pilot decides to fly back to base and get their paint retouched for all of 15 seconds.

Those few seconds while they're not one-shotting your team's light vehicles with Thunderbolts or twin gauss rounds makes the AA role very personally fulfilling.

In fact, as I undertake the frequent and lengthy drives back to base to re-arm and repair my AA vehicle (assuming I haven't been bombed to oblivion on the way, and have scored enough money from AA hits to afford the necessary repairs) it feels to me just like a lap of honor.

In my opinion a good game is a game where you are able to coordinate with the team and obtain a good level of team play, team victory is the primary objective, personal score is a bonus at most.
Personally I tend to take roles that are not necessarily rewarding as score but generally useful to the team:
- Light scout and interceptor (Owens B).
- NARC (Raven prime).
- Sniper (Warhammer A or Novacat).
- Long range harasser (Raven B).
- AA (but only if nobody else does this, I hate it).
- Escort for team mates in assault mechs (Owens B or Bushwacker).
- Dedicated BA on some maps.

About the personal performance usually I look at the number of deaths, a player who dies a lot is also a player that gives a lot of score to the other team, regardless of how many kills he/she scored.

My goal differs for each game.
Could be:
- getting a set rank, while giving me a special disadvantage (play only vehicles, BA, light mechs, and so on)
- keeping a positive k/d ratio (again while giving myself disadvantages)
- playing a game without dieing
but generally it is just to play some fun rounds.

I know that I have played well when I feel satisfied with myself.
Even if the round ends and I have a 3/2 k/d ratio and still be a point commander, I can still feel that I have played a useful round.
There are so many useful things that are just not mesured in kills or points.
Maybe I was sitting on a mountain on SA_Mirage, warning my team of passive flanking raids, giving long range support with my mPPC (especially in the dark), and killing one or two LT or ELRM campers.
In Lyran Commonwealth, Atlas scouts you.

I'm still working on my 10 kills for every variant plan. I'm not very far along yet. So mostly it is:

Pick a variant, use it exclusively until the map ends, killing as many mechs in the process as I can.

I admittedly do the same, but its sometimes a bit inaccurate. Someone repeatedly taking out a Madcat and turning it into scrap metal for instance is giving away more to the opposing team then does the Owens B that runs around disrupting enemies and turns to scrap at the same rate. The Owens pilot can scrap... 3 (?) mechs for each scrapped Madcat.

Very good point.   In fact, for that reason, I think the scoring on MWLL should be tweaked.

I think the formula should be:

(Damage dealt) minus (damage taken) plus (points for killing an enemy pilot) minus (points for dying) minus (damage to teammates).

Agreed Virt, that would be a much better indicator of how you are doing.

My main goal is generally 0 deaths, secondary goal is being #1 on the scoreboard.  Not too complicated.  I usually brawl, and tactically am prone to solo or coordinated flanks when firing lines are established.  I really don't like to die.  If I lose my mech, I will try to get Micro laser if I can't afford another mech.  I actually die inside my mech more often than outside, but rarely more than 2 or 3 deaths a map and will eject if I find escape not an option.

Primary Objective: 0 deaths, a game where I have played the entire round with 1 kill and 0 deaths is a success (I had this, a 35 minute game where every kill was... acquired by teammates before I could get a finishing blow).

Secondary is to have a HIGH KDR, IE if I have to die, I would like to get at least 3-1 or 4-1 KDR.

Third objective (if one and 2 are not possible) is to have an epic game, IE lots of fighting, so at least it feels like the bad KDR was worth it.
I hate Aircraft in this game, if I die from one, I leave.  I wish I could just fire back at them from a Mech.

A good game is when Amarus organizes a best of three rounds against an opponent for SJ, our commanders spend hours calculating awesome load outs that satisfy the cbill limits and then my SJ brothers and sisters strategize the best way to eliminate the other team's assets without losing any of ours.
