Am I annoying people?
« on: July 04, 2010, 11:32:40 AM »
Some people are voicing their dislike to my posting suggestions/ideas on this forum without me actually having the game. (Note: I want it, just there are problems getting it running. PM me for details.)

Just wondering. :-\

EDIT: HAARP, please post all your pictures here when you have time. Thanks.

People are stupid if they think they can have their own way.

... that is, unless they have HEAP rounds, high-explosive homing missiles, and terawatt lasers on a walking weapons platform, that is...

Going to jump in here to cut off any possible incidents.  Also, Jason, a poll is a really bad idea, and I encourage members not to vote.

EDIT:

Jason, your enthusiasm and passion for this game is impressive, but it's really, really hard to take you seriously when you haven't even managed to touch the game, let alone manage to get your hands on a copy of Crysis.  Also, your general inexperience with a lot of the things that relate to not only the game, but the making of the mod and the battletech universe raise the question as to why you so fervently comment on nearly every aspect of the game/community/development.  There's also several general unspoken rules of forum posting that you tend to break routinely.

While you have actually come quite far in learning more and more about what it is you lack, to put it quite frankly, your immaturity shows in a lot of what you post.  Don't take this negatively, but it is still criticism; use it to improve yourself so you can join the community rather than force yourself upon it.  You need to learn more and behave in a much more mature manner before anyone here will really take you seriously, and while enthusiasm and passion is a good thing, showering it over everyone all the time will eventually grind down the patience of the most kindhearted people among us.

My advice to you: take the time to go out and research through alot of the info that pertains to the mod and the canon universe, and try to behave in a more mature manner.  What I mean by this is that you need to stop and take the time to evaluate what you're thinking and what you might post before you post it; try to understand the mood of people in the forum, the real underlying issues behind a post, and make sure you have the know-how and experience before offering your opinion.  What's basically happening now is that you're kinda blindly flinging your thoughts and opinions around with no real concern or weight behind them, and often times you take the ideas that have already been presented previously on the board several times and repost them as your own.

To put it in a understandable fashion, what you've been doing so far is akin to some random guy off the street joining a band and performing in it with no real practice.  It really sticks out and is extremely noticeable, and it can throw off the entire system of that performance.  Don't take this the wrong way, as there's people who should be much more mature and experienced than you who fall into the same area, but it's up to you whether or not to work hard to improve our perception of you.

Don't be discouraged, but temper that enthusiasm with common sense and tact.

2nd edit: don't take the results of the poll too badly, but rather, use it as a means to identify what you need to improve.

wow, ok...

yeah, this is my first forum  :-[

I know! I'll compile a list of things, then when I get the game try it, and then compare to see if the old ideas were horrible.

thanks for a 3rd person point-of-view, now I'll just keep up with the news.

edit: and ask for help getting MWLL running, of course.

edit 2: how do I remove the picture below?

edit 3: oh, and how do you mean maturity/

1. Asking for help to get it working is fine, but be sure to run searches both on the wiki and these forums before retreading the same ground.  If you can find the solution on your own, then more power to you.

2. Seems you figured that out yourself.

3. Maturity can't be taught or explained, but it is recognized and respected.  Think about how people you respect post and interact, why they do what they do, and learn for yourself.  If you have older cousins or siblings, look to them; if you have teachers or upperclassmen who you respect, learn from them.  Maturity is literally growing up, but there's no set level or speed for when you're considered "mature", and often times "mature" people will do very immature things.  A very good rule of thumb, that may seem very basic and simple at first, is don't do anything stupid.

ok thanks, but "immaturity" is a little different, right? I mean, things such as the easter eggs in MWLL and others...

as I've said, mature people do occasionally do immature things, but a single action shouldn't be the basis for judgment for a how mature or immature things are.  Also, humor is a very vague and amorphous thing, and it's a given fact that what one person find funny, another may not.

Also, the immaturity of others' actions shouldn't affect how you behave or act; I'm gonna be honest with you and say that while alot of your posts did bug me, I see that as no reason to be outright rude to you, as much as it may have rankled me.

From a fallen Crusader...
---------------------------------

Here are a few examples.

Example 1:
http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/forum/index.php/topic,9687.msg137761.html#msg137761
A nonsensical post that spits in the face of the thread and almost raped it.

Example 2:
http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/forum/index.php/topic,9523.msg138878.html#msg138878
"Oh it's nice and all, but I with my vast knowledge of the game shall make these corrections!"
Also, and don't think anything of the "thank you" you got for this post. It was a GRAND misclick. :/

Example 3:
http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/forum/index.php/topic,9668.msg138417.html#msg138417
"I have no idea what this is about but I shall post one of my '+1' for posting's sake!"

Example 4:
http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/forum/index.php/topic,9411.msg138796.html#msg138796
"Someone is working on something? Then he must use my ideas!"
"Also I must respond to any drama immediately after it happened!" (see last post)

Example 5:
http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/forum/index.php/topic,9748.0.html
"I know enough about the game flow to propose this map! Somebody make it for me!"

Example 6:
http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/forum/index.php/topic,8943.msg138389.html#msg138389
"It's nice and all but you need this and that and oh, read this book!". You actually pissed off the creator of the map in this one.

Example 7:
http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/forum/index.php/topic,2199.msg138901.html#msg138901
no comment necessary.

Not to mention _countless_ of "this is nice" and "+1" posts and gameplay changes, ideas while you have never played the game.

So please:

1) Do NOT answer to any and every post you see. No '+1', no grand corrections of other people's work, no proposals
2) STOP posting in game related threads until you have played the game!

Great post there SB.

On the maturity thing, I'm very much guilty of posting up nonsensical things pretty often but what newer forum goers probably doesn't realize that it took a LONG time for me to build up credibility on these boards.

The way people post creates a persona that will be ingrained with other people, just like how talking to someone builds or tears down your impression of someone.  Since we rarely "know" someone on the internet so the persona is very much how YOU want to present it.  I chose to be seen as a semi crack pot with an obsession with pancakes but has deep BT lore and helps out where i can on the general tech questions.

Of course one can always get people to think differently about you too with good post and well thought out arguments.  Redvan is one great case of this.  I believe during the 0.2.0  he has a rather decenting view of it and posted quite frequently about it. Back then we had a "smite" feature that allowed for karma points to be taken away.  Before the feature was removed he was at -43 BUT his arguments were well presented even though most people completely disagreed with him if not just his stance on rebuttal.

Now At 0.3.0 he came back to post and is very much in positive karma range.  For me his comments on the new 030 armor balance was very informative in that I knew he didn't fanboi of the mod, but stated what worked and what didn't.  This gave his posts a lot more weight (to me) as person who had their opinions about the mod changed after the devs took steps to address issues.

I would say Jason is in charge of what and where he pleases to post! Sure some posts at times are humorous but we'll go with that. Directly hunting down a member telling him to stop posting in every second topic is far from appreciated nor an acceptable approach towards anyone. If you don't wish to read his post put him on ignore.

2) STOP posting in game related threads until you have played the game!

Anyone's opinion, regardless if they have played it or not, is of value. Numerous Members by this logic would never have been able to post one single line regarding the MOD, prior to its release.

Let Jason grow with this Forum!
