Running two different video cards.
« on: July 04, 2010, 01:43:46 PM »
Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could give me a hand here. Basically after seeing some chatter on the forums and videos on youtube of Mechwarrior 3 (along with pirate moon) I decided to dig it out and install it on my system:

Win7 64
Q6600 @2.4 Ghz
4gigs DDR2 1033Mhz
Radeon HD5850

However I end up getting the problem seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEdPhetwLEc

After checking out mechwarrior3.org and other sites trying to find out how to solve this and having no luck i gave up and instead tore apart some PC's lying around for old video cards and I found a Radeon X850XT.

Is there anyway I can run it in the same case? purely to play Mechwarrior 3.

Also i know there is the resolution fix made by that eaterofpies dude but I couldnt find that anywhere :'(

PS. After playing it in software mode (looks a bit  crappy) I just can't believe how much better than MW4 it is... ::)

Run it on the intended Windows 98 platform :'( I haven't been able to run it to an acceptable degree on any other OS :-X

Well I had a major breakthrough several times tonight so I've got something that should fix this once and for all (if you are having the same bug).

This has only been tested with an unmodified 1.2 exe. A cd cracked version might work but I haven't tested it.

extract this zip into your mechwarrior 3 directory and run loader.exe instead of the mech 3 exe

I have no idea if this will work on Vista but it works under windows xp and wine (under linux).

I have attached it to this post as it does not contain the mechwarrior 3 exe or any material that's copyright to anyone apart from me.

EDIT: oops forgot to say that this fix only applies when running the game in 1024x768. fixes for other resolutions are available on request. I havent managed to get the game to crash in 640 x 480 and anyone here should be able to run it in 1024x768

Thanks for the quick reply and link.. i see i have to register to get that file  ::)

Ive read that people have been able to get it to work on new operating systems and that its is Primarily down to new video cards just not supporting old software. So im just wondering if i can get thisX850XT to work that it might be ok running it with that.

Well i installed the X850XT and win7 automatically picked it up installing the drivers which installed over my HD5850's ...  ::)

I've reinstalled the latest catalyst drivers for my 5850 and its fine. How the hell would i go about installing two sets of drivers without them screwing each other over? im trying to run them both on one monitor. I can switch between the two inputs but windows wont see it as another display.

Seems that its not possible to use the X850XT with the HD5850 as the new drivers dont support old card  :'( not being a techy it took me a while to find that out.

Guess i need to make a new rig up purely to play Mechwarrior 3  ;)

one idea is to get a extra hard drive and load another operating system on it then have two operating systems on two diffrent hard drives

then use your bios to select the os you would like to use (with the corasponding bios setup for each to run a certain video card you would like to use with that particular

os.)

it might work then again it might not, just something to check out if its possible. i wish i had a better answer  :(
