ARGHHHH why is Dwarf Fortress so system-intensive?! Damn thing freezes my computer if I try to play for more than 10-20 mins at a time, once I get to having a decently sized fortress going. WTF? WHY IS A GAME THAT USES 1980'S GRAPHICS SO SYSTEM INTENSIVE?!  >:(
I get that it's a one-man dev team, and the game is technically in Alpha for 7 years or something, and it's all the insane amount of pathing units have to do, but still it makes me want to beat my computer with a lemon wrapped around a large, gold brick.
Really bad optimization,  I guess. Less time spent working on three thousand tissue layers and more time on optimizing pathing, please.

I can max out Crysis/MWLL, I can max out Bad Company 2, but I'll be damned if I can't play DF without my computer shitting itself.
But it's still so fun I keep trying despite the pain it causes me. I must be masochistic that way.
DAMNIT, DWARF FORTRESS, I CAN'T QUIT YOU. Stupid dorfs.

The new benchmark for computer power shouldn't be "I can run Crysis at max", it should be "I can make a medium fortress in Dwarf Fortress".  :P

Try this: http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/

It's helped me immensely, even if the guide is for an older version. Everything in there still applies, except for underground farming. Now you need to make the soil muddy for anything to grow in an underground farm, which usually means breaking into a small pool of water and letting it flood the tiles around it.
Still complicated as hell, though. When in doubt, try the wiki: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Bentgirder

I'm sure you're going to have lots of Fun trying to figure it all out!

Reminds me of angband/zangband.

Beastman/Chaos warrior was my favourite race/class. The randomness was hilarious. Nothing quite like your deity deciding you would do better with a limp, a nasty bleeding cut or something like that. Or your beastman-nature mutating a new elephants trunk for you to bash your enemies with, or mutating the ability to produce alcohol within your body resulting in random drunkenness. Or your fickle deity granting you a nice magical two handed weapon only to the very next level decide you would serve it better if you where a weak goblin instead of a feared beastman... Ah, good times.

/Merf - Always carried scrolls of teleport for when one happened to end up in the middle of invisible multiplying enemies.

You should just be able to drag the window borders to whatever size you like.

Also: BAH, my fortress is completely bare in terms of materials to make armor. Can't make a damn thing, no Tin to smelt Bronze and nothing at all to make steel. Lots of giant silver axe traps for defense, but that's about it. Not one magma chamber or magnetite vein anywhere.

Okay... *deep breath* here goes.

MercMuffin: To maximize framerate, check this page. Some of the best things you can do are avoiding the caverns, atomsmashing unwanted items and killing off useless dwarves (GOD fappING DAMN IT THIS WHOLE IMMIGRANT WAVE WAS MILKERS AND THRESHERS AND CHEESE MAKERS [though it can be more useful to draft them or turn them into haulers]), turning off weather and temperature, and reducing the GFPS cap to 20.

As for acquiring iron, there's several ways you can go about this. First off, hematite and limonite are also iron ores. Failing that, you can always trade for iron and bronze bars from humans and dwarves, and steel from dwarves. You could even try buying all of a caravan's metal items (armor, weapons, random furniture and toys) for melting provided your craftsdwarves' output of goods is high enough. Though this can get rather wood burning intensive, so you might want to trade for logs too, unless you're planning on starting a war with the elves  because of your lumber industry... though they're incredibly useless most of the time. Usually their trade goods consist of useless clothing and wooden armor, and some berries. Sometimes though, if their civilization is in the right area, you can get REALLY GOOD tamed animals. This one time I had a fortress guarded by tamed giant eagles thanks to the elves.

Griffin: When you make it fullscreen you have to zoom in using the mouse wheel. You're welcome. :P Like I said to DFDelta, I'd be happy to help you learn. Just with a more direct form of communication. It's way more helpful to have a personal guide, rather than a guide you have to read.

Edit: fapp this, I'm making a DF thread.

Image snip'd

Wow. That's...... apt. Note that the unofficial motto of DF is "Losing Is Fun!" which proves itself to be very very true.
