Salvage
« on: July 06, 2010, 08:38:54 AM »
I think that MWLL should give us the ability to salvage mechs.

Instead of shooting a mech/vehicle your opponent has ejected out of for points, you just salvage it.

Mech Salvage
- Walk beside a vehicle when: it is empty + the owner is dead/ has left the mech for a certain ammount of time and are not very close to the mech
- Hold the salvage button (a bar will appear and will take about 5 seconds to fill)
- When filled, the vehicle will disappear, and points (the ammount you would usually get for shooting the vehicle) will be added to your C-Bill total
- Anyone can do it (if you find an empty vehicle laying around that you didn't even damage, you can still salvage it)
- Cannot shoot or move while savaging (kind of like shutting down, but radar and map still work)
- You can stop the salvage at any time by re-clicking the button (bar will reset)

agree. no just "APC=buy-drive-hop out-ditch as BA-Action-Die-Respawn at APC- Rinse Repeat"
People are stupid if they think they can have their own way.

You kinda get plenty of money off of just selling mechs at base now already. Maybe this can be looked at again when there's more gamemodes.

No thanks - too arcadey.

Besides, we already get paid CBills for the destruction we wreak.    So just shoot the wreckage if you want.

If there's going to be any genuine salvage, then let it be done by a dedicated salvage vehicle (but then, who'd want to spend their game driving that?)

The reason I thought of the idea was because I thought that shooting empty mechs = lame/ waste of ammo for most mechs, and at the same time is pretty unrealistic.
(who would pay you for destroying a slightly damaged empty Madcat when you could of just brought it back to base)
Also, the fact that no one (except Jason ;)) would want to pilot a dedicated salvage vehicle means that this would be a good middle ground between realism and fun.
For the APC, you can make it receive a bonus for salvage and take less time (half I guess), so they have more of an incentive for doing it.

What's to stop the Salvage Vehicle from being WTF-bombed into dust and ashes? Is this SV going to have small weapons? Are you expecting allies to assist you in defending the fallen enemy mech?

Are you still honestly thinking that an APC, which is currently useful in its own way despite being hellaciously fragile, would last the full 5 seconds it takes to salvage a wrecked mech?

The SV or salvaging APC would be nothing but a free kill for the enemy. To be clear, I don't have a problem with salvage per se, but I do have a problem with the options you have presented me with.
I want to put a bullet between the eyes of every panda that won't screw to save it's species. I want to open the dump valves on oil tankers and smother all those French beaches I'll never see. I want to breathe smoke. I want to destroy something beautiful.

Zaro, are you talking to me or the other guys?
I never said that it was APC only, and I said that APCs should get a point boost and salvage time shortage to make the risk a little more worth the reward.
It only takes 5 seconds. you just walk up to it, click a button, and TA-Dah!

This is where I'm confused.
ANY vehicle (mechs, tanks, maybe BA and even Aeros if you're skilled enough to land beside the abandoned mech) can salvage.
I'm not asking for a new vehicle or anything, just the option to salvage.

Also, the point you made about allies assisting you is correct. Either salvage when there aren't any threats nearby, or get allies to take the heat off of you.

Salvage would work much better in a dedicated game mode rather than a Solaris Arena deathmatch. Just running up and hitting a button is bad on both the canon and simulation fronts. Why?

Canon, it takes a big honkin' truck to haul the mech back to base to repair. These trucks don't come out in the middle of a battle unless truly desperate. So a single BA, or even an APC, would be just silly.

Simulation, again, there is no real element of 'fun' added with just running up hitting a button, and it breaks immersion.

Now, as part of a dedicated gamemode? Hmm.. I seem to remember reading something about that somewhere...

Honestly, if the Dev's put in a flatbed truck that can go pick up a damaged mech and drive them back to base (which are automatically sold when you enter the hangar) would be something I would have a lot of fun doing. Generate a whole lot of cash so I can pull out a Madcat Prime while everyone else is running around in Light Mechs.

I'm a semi relevant vain, it do play "salvage" from time to time in the current iteration.  Generally it involves me noticing that one of my teammate's marker on the map hasn't moved for a long time, this tends to be an empty tank or mech where the player has dropped or ejected and ran off.

Considering the enemy gets point for blowing up the wreckage, i grab a cheap fast unit and park it in a hidden spot near the "salvage" and drive the wreck back to the mech bay for "recycling".  It's tedious but has an element of constant danger as you could die if any enemies see you.

suddenly i'm not the only one to drive salvage "trucks"

as an offset, make 2 salvage vehicles: apc (normal functions+salvage) and Carrier (find some Canon one, like the prairie schooners or Apocalypse for wheeled) that has lots of armor to withstand some shots but cost more.

Note: I do read the Battletech web site.
