Just a 120 GB SSD disc will cost me over 460 Euro or 600 USD
That equals almost half my monthly income.
But can hve the SSD for OS and some of the important programs like Anitvirus and firewall and such.
Then I can use the 2 TB HDD for other things, at least until the SSDs become cheaper and larger. :P

You can already get 250gb HDD, think there are bigger ones actually, haven't looked in a while. Yes they do cost more than your PC but hey, you never said it had to be cheap :D

At the moment all anyone uses SSD for is the OS and main programs just becuase it's fast. You would never use them for storage in a RAID, unless you are farting cash every few minutes lol.

I can get SSDs with as much as 500GB.
But as you say it almost cost more than my new rig will cost.
Yes I say almost as I plan on building a rig with some rather high end components that cost a bit to procure.
On top of that I will be getting a retail version of Win 7, yes I know the OEM version are cheaper, but it will save me alot of hassle later on with the licence and stuff if I decide to replace my Mainboard when I eventually upgrade that rig.

Its an expensive rig I plan on building, but will hopefully save me upgrading for a while.

Quad Core i7-930 2.80GHz S-1366 4.8GT/s 8MB 45nm CPU
Mainboard S-1366 X58 ATX 3xPCI-E Audio7.1 GbLAN 1394 SATA-II Raid DDR3
6GB Kit(3x2048MB) DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz Value Gold Tri Channel 8-8-8-24 (i7)1.65V
Geeforce GTS 250 GFX card with 1 GB ram
2 TB Sata HDD
120 GB Sata SSD
Win 7 Home premium 64 bit Retail
Xonar Essence STX PCI-E  Sound card
700W PSU and brand new case

Total price estimated at aproximately 2750 USD/2150 Euro. (aprox. 17.000 NOK)
Its expensive but worth it as I havent had a major computer upgrade for the past 3 years, only been minor upgrades like a new graphics card.
Would have gotten a 6 core CPU had it not been for 2 reasons.
Its way too expensive, and too new to be worth it yet.
Probably too many bugs and stuff with the 6 core to be worth it yet.
When the price drops to what the quad core are today I will consider it, not before.

CPU and MB are subject to change depending on availability when I purchase them.
Some might suggest I get an ATI card instead of the geeforce, but I will not.
I had trouble with ATI cards in the past, the most notable problem was that I was totally unable to get the drivers to work.
Dunno what the problem was, and I had a guy I know who works with with this kinda stuff look at it, and after 3 full days of working on the problem even he gave up.

That rig will play MWLL and Crysis max settings easily. And I have 5970, and I'll be damnned if I can get the drivers to work properly. I had driver problems quite a few years back with ATI, thus never brought them before. And I hate myself for doing it again. ATI + drivers = SUCKAGE. I'm sure alot of people are now going to post how awsome ATI are and there drivers though lol :D

Either way, nice rig :D

quite the opposite

ati+drivers suck. bad. very bad.

So why do ppl go around saying ATI is so much better?
Maybe its better, but whats the use when the drivers cause so much trouble?

go ahead and buy NVidia, ATi's just cheaper at the cost of reeking of driver incompatibility

edit: thats just my experience

My experiance as well. And normally the best ATI and best NVidia cards are within about 1-2% difference in performance. Geneallly it doesn't matter which you pick, everyone always says ATI because they are normally cheaper. You get what you pay for ^^

I allways had good experiences with Nvidia as opposed to ATI.
As I said before, the one time I got an ATI card I was totally unable to get the drivers to work.
Even a guy I know who works with building computers and software installation on a daily basis could not get it to work.
He also said that he hate it when ppl order with ATI cards, as he always struggle to get it to work.

However I miss the old Voodoo cards, they used to be very good for gaming.
Unfortunately they stoped making them.

Oh and havent this thread gotten a little off topic by now? :P

Come to think of it, I should get another monitor as well.
That way I can use both computers at the same time.
Dont suppose anyone here know some lottery numbers for next week so I can get the money for my new rig? :P

Get a monitor that can do 3d. That's my new purchase :D Not that my monitor is going to break anytime soon. Ah well I can hope.

Yeah maybe thread got a bit raped.... But I think all the problems was fixed or solved so it's ok if not, erm post :D

as far as i know 3d monitors don't require glasses (correct me if im wrong) but instead rely on two signals to transmit 3d-style picture. it modifies them and combines then on-the-fly, so the quality is less than an HD screen, but that should change soon. they might also have built-in graphics accelerators and they might require special cards. make sure that your 3d monitor/TV has both VGA and standard TV cable inputs!

I'm afriad your wrong :D

There are three different ways of doing 3d (There are more but not mainstream) and they all require glasses. There are 3d that don't require glasses but it's shite.

Anyway first 3d is what you get in cinema (in the UK anyway). It phases two pictures at once slightly out of phase on the screen. the glasses look seethru. It's gernally pretty good quality 3d but huge screens in cinema make it look even better ^^ It works with polarised glasses and the glasses are only a few quid. Far as I know it's only for cinema, being it's good quality and cheap but harder to do than red and blue 3d.

This replaced the horrible (imo) blue and red glasses. There are other colours used but blue and red are the most common. It works in a simular way as previously except differating the pictures by colour so only one eye can see the red picture and the other eye the blue picture. It is is generally the WORST 3d and is what you can do on ANY computer with 90% of all games!!! Yes I have tried it and playing uT3 or batman or tf2 in 3d is pretty cool. Sadly it is very limited, things aren't going to jump out of screen and touch you ^^

Then we come to the uber expencive completly amazing 3d that nvidia have brought out. And is also comming to TV soonish.

Basically you need a monitor with 120hz speed, allowing 60hz per eye. The monitors don't generally cost too much more than a normal monitor. You then need a £120 (Roughly) pair of glasses per person. The glasses are basically two shutters, that close and open EXTREMLY quickly, faster than the eye can see. They basically open and close so only the eye it wants can see the picture on the screen. And the TV is flipping between the picture for the right eye and the picture for the left eye in sync with the glasses. This costs the most, but will give you outstanding 3d pictures that once again can be used on about 90% of all games.

You just need to download a really small file and ta da, instant 3d all games. However I don't know if you can do this for ATI cards.

From FPS, I didn't notice a huge drop, but it does tax your graphic card slightly more.

If you are going to buy a new monitor and you can afford a 3d one, I would buy it ^^ 3d is the future and it's awsome.

*Edit* I was in a rush, just wanted to add, doing 3d does not effect your res on your monitor. You run the game just like you would normally, except nvida witch craft drivers suddenly makes it all 3d. So if you run games at 1900x1200, thats what it will be in 3d too. You don't need special cables at all, the 3d monitor are literally just a monitor with 120hz refresh rate. And for red and blue 3d, you just need any screen + the downloaded drivers. It literally takes 30secs to do.

On a side note, if you do try, you will have to go into the graphic control panel each time you want to disable or enable 3d. Otherwise every game you run is 3d or 2d. Kinda annoying but no big deal :D
