Crysis 2 system
« on: July 16, 2010, 01:22:07 PM »
I'm planning on getting Crysis 2 when It's released, and they say that it has about the same system requirements as Crysis.

I want to be able to play it at max settings with 1680 x 1050  resolution with full AA enabled if possible.

Currently I have:
- GeForce 9800 GT 1 Gig
- AMD quad processor (forgot which) 2605 Mhz
- Window 7 64 bit
- 4094 Mb memory

Ask if you need any more info (this is my first time giving out system info, so I'm just using Steam)

My current system can play Crysis om all very high, full res with no AA with little slowdowns. However, every once in a while my FPS will drop down to about 1 - 0.5. I managed to find a way to stop this from happening, but every time it happens again, anything I did before to solve the problem doesn't work any more (changing the motion blur, changing the settings, Ctrl Alt Delete, exiting and restarting the game).

I'm planning on either getting another 9800 GT, or a GTX 460 for the Dx 11 support.
If you guys could give me any tips/suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'd imagine pretty similar, only because they're also targetting Xbox 360 which is probably about the same as a mid-range system these days

I would suggest going for the DX11 support anyway rather than dualing that older card

Yeah, I'm thinking about getting a GTX 460 for the dx11. It's about $200 in Canada.
Does it preform better than dual 9800 GT's or about the same? (another 9800 GT would be $115)
What would be a good company to buy from? (my current one's from BFG)

I would suggest considering the radeon's as well at the $200-300 range, before this year I was pretty much only getting Geforce but found the new radeon's to be better at the price levels in some cases

I don't know for sure if the one new card would be better, I would guess it would simply because not all games support dual card setups.

I heard Crysis works better with Nvidias, and I'm assuming that Crysis 2 will do the same.
My dad has had a few bad experiences with Radeons (turning into paperweights and whatnot :o) so I've never really considered them :-\

As shown on the above link, the HD 5850 and the GTX285 are basically the same price, around $300 but the radeon barely edges out the geforce for Crysis.  Also keep in mind the HD 5850 can drive 3 monitors.

as for reliability, well time will tell I guess, but since AMD now owns ATI hopefully that counts for something

I'm sure cyrsis 2 will be better optimized than cyrsis 1 was.  I'd actually wait on any upgrades just for one game just to make sure the game is coming out on time plus that gives more time for hardware cost to go down.

If your going to buy a brand new card, I would defiently get a DX11 card, make yourself future proof, and DX11 cards are normally pretty damn powerful ^^ Just find Two dx11 cards same price from ATI and Nvidia, and see which one performs better and buy that one ^^

Unless you hate either manufactor, then pick the best one you can afford thats DX11.

SLI on a card as old as yours, is not going to be worth it at all, not only could you just buy one card thats far more powerful but the new card will run faster as well. (And won't need SLI motherboard and a PSU that can handle it + all the extra heat in the case (Assuming thats a problem)).

From the specs you listed we've got pretty much the same systems. I plan to upgrade my card to the evga gtx460 1gb oc'd card within the month. I've never had a problem with any card from this company.
I've read a lot of reviews on this card and it's getting nothing but praise from its reviewers.

Check out this review, and pay attention to the benchmarks. It out performs the ati equivalent on every game and scored just under a gtx470 in the benchmarking tests.

looks like a decent card, but I would have wanted to see it compared to offerings in higher price brackets, such as the HD5850 and GTX285. Seems they're missing that as a good comparison point.

Wow, I just played Crysis on all medium settings and I have to say, the difference in gameplay is incredible!
No longer do I have to shoot at Koreans for what seems an eternity! I can now take down a group of 4 guys in about 2-5 seconds, usually that's how long it takes me to kill just one!

Before, I spent the whole campaign cloaking and lining up perfect headshots, and failure to stay hidden would result in a quick death due to my less than decent FPS when the action gets thick
(my first playtrough was on Delta 8)). Now I can Rambo through a whole base, bashing in skulls with my max strength until there's not a single hint of someone screaming "YANKEE SHANKEE!!!!!!" in the air.

If only I could have this smoothness while experiencing the amazing visuals at the same time :'(
I now officially NEED to upgrade  ;D

maybe its just me, but PC Perspective either is very pro-Nvidia or they just don't know how to do a proper card roundup with a balance of competing cards above and below the range.

toms hardware usually does a much better roundup, which is where I decided to go with the HD5850:
