It does suck to get stuck with non-communicative teammates, but remember - set an example and people will follow you.

Whenever this is happening, start teamchatting like crazy. Tell people to call out grid coordinates of enemy units, especially Long Toms and missile boats. Avoid groups of enemies and try to single out stragglers. If you feel like getting work done at close-range, gather up some droogs before heading out, and remember - in any game where there is a significantly higher amount of unit health versus amount of damage the average unit can put out, outnumbering your opponent becomes an insane advantage.

There will always be times where this likely won't solve your problems (such as when they lock down most of the map with Heavy 'mechs and you're all still stuck in Lights) but you will find this tip useful otherwise.

But trust me, there ARE people who can get ridiculous scores, and it's especially dependent on how quickly they rise up the rank ladder compared to their opponents - the fastest and simplest way being to rush and fight up close as much as possible. I got a few quick kills on Thunder Rift and before their team caught up  I was blasting away at Hollanders and Kit Foxes with a single 6MBL Puma.

I have had times when I have come up against very skilled players.
Sometimes they even seem able to 1-shot me no matter what I do.
In those cases I have been sitting and shouting curses at my screen believing they must be cheating and god knows what else, but I never call them cheaters openly in the chat.
When I manage to calm down a bit again I realise that I'm just up against skilled players, but it can be very frustrating sometimes.
There are times I have asked ingame how this and that guy could take me out that easily trying to figure out what the guy may be packing on his mech and how he goes about getting those hits, but I rarely get any responses.

Also note that server is not always great about damage feedback, so sometimes you are very much worse off than you think you are.

Looks good to have 15-0 on the board, but it's pretty boring letting others take the risks to do it.  Much better are those games where you get 12+ kills and take risks but somehow you just survive, time after time, those are very satisfying.  Most people who have played MWLL for a little while couldn't care less about their K/D ratio, fun is more important than staying alive. *snip*

What heretic said is just too true. I don't look up my points until the map changes. I just don't care. It's all about having fun with people who like to work together as a team.

And seeing an uller explode after a heavy gauss hit like yesterday night!

I have to agree on that, to me its not about winning or scoring high, its about having fun.
That dont mean I cant appreciate high socres and winning matches.

I was the last on my team to leave the hangar, taking my time selecting the mech I wanted, still I was the first on my team to get a kill and that was something that gave me alot of staisfaction today when I was playing a match.
Its the first time I can remember ever doing so as I usually have a bit of a ahrd time finding and hitting a target, which is why it gave me such satisfaction.

Still, I had fun and there was some good teamwork going on as well.

My solution to an uncommunicative team: Hide under them, whilst shooting your heavy piss laser at the enemy Mechs until you have about 95K. Buy a Long Tom (map-dependent I guess) and then proceed to advance to Khan rank in about 10 minutes. You'll have plenty of meat shields to protect you. Hell, I even once bribed a guy 200K to park an APC next to me so I didn't have to move to get ammo. You can win for your team quite easily.

Note that this may ruin your experience of the game and is only fun if you're pissed off and feeling spiteful like I was when I did this last.

With as tough as the mechs are now, it's really not that hard to do.  As long as you don't charge headlong into the enemy mechline you can fairly easily disengage and go repair if you start to get dinged up.  Combine that with a LOT of battlearmor flitting around, and you can sometimes see guys with 20:0 K/D that aren't even close to leading the team in damage.

In previous versions, I used to rack up big scores by taking a hawkmoth behind the lines and LRMing retreating mechs, but they don't blow up after 20 LRMs anymore heh.

My MO lately has been taking out an Osiris B and seeing if I can keep that same asset the entire match while still effectively dealing damage.
It's a challenge that I don't pull of very often, but the idea is to practice survivability.
That can usually get me the first 2-3 ranks pretty quickly, later-game is where the survival challenge kicks in.

I used to charge headfirst again and again in hopes to try to get another rank before I die, until I realized how many points I was giving away to the other team by not really trying to survive.

The trick is to get yourself into a mindset of picking your fights carefully and being more concerned with supporting your teammates.

That said, I really hate playing matches with too many people obsessed with their K/D. Come on guys, we don't need 3 friendly Long Toms... ::)

Why for gods sake would you want to laminate the women!

to the original poster.

The answer is to play a VERY specific way.

to those who think it is about sacrificing your teammates, i present the following screenshots.

The reason everyone on the team did well was because they kept returning the base after every fight, and since--- on average, ever player was doing better because they were working together, and the teams were accumulating money quickly, the game becomes super one sided.

Because of how good more expensive mechs are vs the cheaper mechs, and how the in game economy works, once one group gets momentum the rest of the group can gain from that and the enemy can never catch up.

Even if only 2 people on one team are working together you can get this phenomenon.

You should have seen it when I had 2 friends to play with :)

I hate Aircraft in this game, if I die from one, I leave.  I wish I could just fire back at them from a Mech.

We get it Buzz, your Uberleet ;)

Honestly, daft quests like Toasters are where the funs at, for teamplay (the holy grail of satisfaction) I'll stick to our unit games, and that's a VERY different kettle of fish to any pub match ;D.

In addition to some things already said,

1) Sometimes you get people who (for whatever reason) seem intent on feeding kills/points to the other team, engaging in strategies and tactics nearly tantamount to suicide.

But, and more importantly in my mind:

2) SA as it stands is inherently destabilizing: someone or some team who performs well in earlier evenly matched fights in terms of material, is rewarded by later encountering more fights that are materially imbalanced in their favor. If SA were instead intended to be stabilizing, you might see poorly performing persons or teams being rewarded with better equipment. That is, SA rewards precisely the wrong people, from the perspective solely of desiring a balanced fight.

Don't worry, when 3 or more people are on voice chat, it is a unit game - against an uncoorinated opposition.  yee hah...

I like Toasters approach, too.  Try something, have fun with it.  Most importantly, just have fun.

I do have to say the skill disparity is pretty big in this game. It's not often that a match sees a gentle slope of kills/deaths among a team. Most of the time, there's two or three people on a team with more than 10 kills, while the rest are lucky to break 3.

Thankfully, kills themselves don't matter that much. You can go 0-0 and get pretty close to sakhan rank. It's just a matter of staying in a light mech with enough punch to rack up damage points against those in heavy/assaults and not dieing yourself. This is easily done on some maps with missleboats.

I had maybe 3 kills, but was at 90k rank and had 132k cbills in my "wallet", earlier today playing on Clearcut.
All this I got from running the light 4xLRM10 light mech(Cougar A I think it is).
We had a couple good narcers and all I had to do was let loose with missiles, and most of the time when no Nracs was up there was some enemy somewhere I could lock on and shoot at.

So its not that hard to get money if you just have the right assets at the right place and time.
