Title: Dear Funbocks: WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Post by: Tufted Titmouse on February 09, 2013, 02:20:27 AM
I mean seriously.

*Opens MWLL*
*Joins Fbocks Alpha because it's the only server populated*
*Pallisades*
*Plays grudgingly*
*Next map is Sandblasted*
*Plays grudgingly*
*Next map is Sandblasted... Again...*
*Leaves, spitting fire and screaming obscenities*
*Joins a few hours later*
*Map is Pallisades*

WHAT THE ACTUALL fappKKKK *kills a kitten*

If you have any Funbocks-related issues, you should post them on the CJW forum (http://cjw.dyndns.biz/forum/list.php?8). Your post is harder to miss there.

People want official maps, people get official maps. Nobody is responsible for a random rotation.

Don't like it? Get people on Beta instead.

Beta has custom maps, which is worse.. ;). Also I don't understand why Alpha has a random rotation now, it didn't before, did it? Or at least only the whole sequence of maps was random without a random chance at each map switch.

The issue for me is mostly getting the same map twice, which seems to mostly happen when server pop isn't very high (though not always), which then tends to make the server population 0, especially when its tc marshes, tc or tsa sandblasted.

In the past, random rotations on servers were used to avoid having the server start with the same map after a crash (thus if the server always crashes after x maps, all maps after that one in the rotation would never appear). But I think Funbocks Alpha runs pretty stable for a whole rotation round and it does have scheduled restarts.

My real issue is that either official maps are range-ey and annoying, or that people want to play official maps too much. No matter how crappy the lighting was, I miss underground, where LRMs were literally impossible to use (except for Brawling with them).

In all honesty, running around roflsmashing LRM boats in a gods-damned Sparkle gets boring after a while, believe it or not.

Some custom maps are quite good.  I See no reason to not include ones like tc_stonerose and have a little variety.

Eh?  There was no belief system behind it, no texts decreeing that it should be so, and it's not been in place that long.  I suggest you read this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogma).  I think that the reason it was set up was it is a good idea to have separate servers for Official Maps, Community Maps and Solaris arena.  If you can come up with a better idea, I'm sure that the server admins would be open to changing it.

Or, you know, you could run a server and put whatever maps you wanted on it.

Still, Jesus loves you

Already do, thanks.

I would rather have two servers split between maps that work well for smaller and larger groups.  I.e maps like stonerose are good for small to medium sized teams, but Frostbite is much larger, and works better for larger groups.

The artificial separation of official versus community maps is based on what?  A belief that community maps are always beta and broken?  Not as good etc?  There are official maps I'd rather not play, and I'm sure they're left off of the rotation on the official server.  So saying "That's what funbocks beta is for" isn't really a a reasoned argument against all community maps being on alpha etc

No, it's more a belief that every 30min I'm going to have to download a new 250mb map of variable quality and end up mid-way into a game by the time it's done. Having separate servers for official and unofficial mean that official players will never have to wait between matches while unofficial means if you want to experiment the option is there, but not forced.

Also, Beta runs official + custom maps, not just custom maps (unless they changed it).

I think a vote map option is what's really needed here. I thought i saw a thread about some server tools that make that possible.

There is indeed such a tool (http://forum.mechlivinglegends.net/index.php/topic,18606), it was even posted on CJW's boards (http://cjw.dyndns.biz/forum/read.php?7,1494), but it appears HAARP didn't like the logs it needs to create (http://cjw.dyndns.biz/forum/read.php?7,1494,1502#msg-1502), even though it's possible to create filtered logs for what you want to see (http://), but it appears it might possibly conflict with whatever scrips HAARP already runs (http://cjw.dyndns.biz/forum/read.php?7,1494,1499#msg-1499), though it looks like it hasn't been tested (http://cjw.dyndns.biz/forum/read.php?7,1494,1503#msg-1503).

Well, there's no way he can doubt you with those many sources. :P

I expect HAARP can now do that without log_verbosity 2, based on these findings (http://cjw.dyndns.biz/forum/read.php?8,2361,2371#msg-2371). Probably even a fake sv_league_url can be used to that purpose. He could even take advantage of the existing Rconnect code mainly for the part to send commands through rcon/http, unless he has its own way.

Please mix community and official maps. Separate the servers into high quality and low quality maps if you'd like, because something like ring of fire shouldnt be seen as "bad" compared to sandblasted.

That's how it used to be. Then people complained about it. Then I separated them :-X

Also it seems the custom maps download a lot faster now. Used to be painfully slow, now it's just a bit of a bother first time, but not the 15+minute wait it once was.

Blame mwllmaps.com for that. I used to redirect half the map downloads there to lessen the load. Now I'm serving more content directly.

HAARP, have you considered using Rconnect with the sv_league_url (http://forum.mechlivinglegends.net/index.php/topic,18606.msg345753.html#msg345753) option, or you're thinking of using more like a server-side mod for something like that?

i guess, if you managed to have mapvoting working that would solve everything. it would probably keep people playing a lot longer on the server, as i at least always leave whenever certain maps come up. its probably a lot of work but it would be sooo worth it.

I'd have to write my own version of it. Rcon is buggy on our servers.

I was going to do that long ago, but then MWLL sorta died. Didn't feel like writing new scripts for 20 players. But with renewed interest in the game now, I might do it.

Bruno, remind me again how sv_league_url works. I can just set it to 'foo' and it will show me when the map ends, correct? What's the log syntax?
Title: Re: Dear Funbocks: WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Post by: Bruno_007 on August 29, 2013, 01:37:23 PM
I'll check the exact message when I get home. What I know is if you use an invalid IP it'll give a different message than if you had used a valid one. Nonetheless, they both throw out an end round message at the same time in the log. I chose to stick with a valid IP, 127.0.0.1, although I'm not gonna use that data.
Title: Re: Dear Funbocks: WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Post by: Bruno_007 on August 29, 2013, 08:59:14 PM
So, "Roundend: failed transfer, code 7" with a correct IP, 127.0.0.1 for example, and "Roundend status NOT OK: 404" with some random characters, if I'm not mistaken.

I have no idea how it could be buggy though, all I can think of is the http_startserver port blocked.
