Only option is to rely on 3rd party hosting.
So, once (if ever) this thing comes to speed - the data will be all over the internet with bit-rot stale links and whatever comes after that?

I am fully aware of the existence of both a direct upload plugin as well as the imgur one.

Direct upload is out of the question.

And Imgur is an unbelievable piece of shit. See

haarp I use sharex which uploads to a specific folder on my imgur and gives me a direct link in my pastetray thing -I'm fine with off-site hosted images-

The thing is, I would probably too go for that (no pictures storage) where I running a forum too.
Can't blame you there haarp, it is just the right thing in the long term IMO.

Performance wise this forum, seems to be, the ultimate pick, and quite so for other reasons as well.

OTOH, in the long run we better find an long term content storage - one we can call "endorsed", or, we will again have what we had on the old forum - valuable content lost over time?

Can we find affordable (yet acceptable) storage somehow?

For the time I resort to both Yandex disk (30GB free) and dropbox.com (10? GB free), but that's to be time proven yet?

Cloud - aka "someone else's computer". As with any cloud service, don't upload important things and expect that they'll last forever. A dozen things can (and regularly do) go wrong. Have backups.

imgur has proven to be somewhat reliable, in as they don't delete images. At least not unless they challenge their mods' politically correct SJW world view.
