MWLL Tutorial Series (with doorknob)
« on: April 11, 2011, 03:39:50 PM »
As an effort to get new players up and running, and address the myriad of questions I hear from guys named 'MechWarrior(2)' on public servers in the middle of raging firefights, I've done some tutorial videos and tossed them up on the YouTube.

I will keep this post updated with links as they come out.

Part One: Battle Armor Movement
Part Two: Battle Armor Weaponry
Part Three: BattleMech Movement
Part Four: Weapon Groups
Part Five: Lasers
Part Six: Terrain Control Overview
Part Seven: Banking
Part Eight: Autocannons
Part Nine: Ammunition & Repairs
Part Ten: Missiles (Part 1)

If anyone has a topic they'd like to see covered by me, please drop me a line.

Good stuff 8)

Possible improvements:
  • if shooting alone set the "minimum players per team" (g_minteamlimit) to 1 0 to get rid of the "game will start [...]" message
  • maybe show the buttons you mention as text overlays as well?
  • target dummies - just ask in the forums, i'm sure someone will help out
  • boost your voice a bit :)
Suggestions in case you have the time and nerve:
  • Basics of different vehicular/mech weapon types: ballistic, energy, missiles
  • Electronics: radar basics, passive/active, (G/A)ECM, C3
  • Terrain Control basics ("no, it's not deathmatch with bases" :D)
  • Vehicular/Mech combat basics (ouch, time-intensive):
    • component system
    • using cover
    • spreading damage
    • brawling/circling/...
    • long-range direct-fire
    • missile support
    • ...?

Just finished watching them all. Informative and even entertaining. No significant omissions. You're a good presenter. Perhaps the series should be linked from the front page?

What are the planned future topics? I know weapons is next, of course important. Cygma covered everything I think would be useful and practical.

I am available all this week to act as a test dummy, if you want to cover combat tactics. Just send me a PM if you like. I'm GMT, so probably at least 5 hours later than you, and between 09:30 and 18:30 GMT works best for me.

Oh, these are very well-presented!  I found the BA stuff particularly helpful, and look forward to more videos.  I would volunteer as a practice dummy, but I think you want someone who's a better pilot.  But in any case, thank you, doorknob!   :D

RE: Cygma

Awesome, thank you and thank you. Those are super good tips (especially the setting players to 1 thing, I knew there had to be a way to ditch that message). Also, I knew there had to be more stuff to do, and half the stuff in that second list just never occurred to me to talk about. We'll see what I have time for and feel qualified to tackle.

Great initiative man! It was informative and clear. If you need some more dummys or even a second perspective I can always help or film from the outside of the mech ^^

Thanks! I'm just about ready to get into topics that require pilots on the other end of stuff that are hard to cover in the middle of another game. I'll add you to my list of victi- err... volunteers when that comes about.

I've added the latest video (from this morning!) to the post at the top.

Add me in too

As long as I'm not having a clan match, I can help on the weekends and can probably make it on weekdays as well

Well, since there wasn't much time to praise your videos during battle earlier this day (earlier at least for me), i would like to make up for that now. I watched your videos yesterday and i really like your style of doing them as well as your way of explaining stuff.
Since i have been playing for several weeks now i was kind of hoping for you to cover some more advanced topics too (that doesn't mean your videos weren't helpful, especially the weapon-tutorials were great for me).
I suppose you already thought about creating a video on Missiles? I'd like that, because - frankly - i don't really get the hang of them (with all these types...). And of course i would love to see a video like "how to survive in an airplane" or "how to crash a VTOL". I nearly stopped trying to use them, because i usually end up dead very fast.

If you need an easy-to-hit-and-stupid-like-a-drone target for your videos, just ask me (GMT+1). There is nobody out there who can compete with my skills in getting stuck, getting killed and of course stumbling over my own feet.

+1 Great
Compliments for your work. Should be integrated at the main homepage, because of presenting helpfull content for possible new players.
In real, it could be integrated at the only partly filled http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/info/
Thanks for it.

It is intentional, though usually not too horribly personal.

In light of the "JJs are useless" thread, maybe make a tutorial on Jump Jets?  I'm no expert, but two people I can think of that consistently use JJ effectively against me in brawls are Invictus and Merf, so maybe drop them a line for that aspect of the tutorial.  I'm sure there are a lot more JJ pros out there as well.
