I apologize to all of you
« on: November 01, 2011, 02:31:25 PM »
Hello MWLL community.

I have been investigating the behavior of our MWLL server. By that for the last 2 weeks, there are some issues on the server that I discovered.

CD-Key check:

1. Yes, we have discovered the issue that nonlegal keys, for 60/70% could work on our server;

Reason to blame is that, we have been under attack by ddos attacks in the past. By that we had to disable some server ports. Those ports made the Denial of Service to be very easy. Plus to be called as "access violation in the HTTP/XML-RPC service". The CD-KEY check is done only by one server port and normally for other games, as for example Call of Duty 2.

I tested some keys randomly, actually fake keys(by the registry) to see if they works and to try to get connected. Which most of them really worked and that shocked me. The server.log itselfs, I couldn't find anything that proved that the keys were failing.

As of right now, I -re-uploaded the content of the Bin32/Bin64 folder and some ports are reopened. CD-Check is solved.
It was never my intention that the server is to be called a "Hack" server. I really have to apologize to the Devs and the great players here.

>XI< Xtreme Idiots got nothing to do with this and I am the only one to blame for this serious fail from my side . I made the decisions and gave the orders, that I really regret now. I was so stupid not to test this further with more faked keys.

If the great people/Dev's here decide to ban me from the forum, I would totally understand that.

Sincerely,
X-RayXI

PS: With the latest issues, I might bring the server down to do a full wipe and reinstall the server with other maps.

Regardless of what, and who's at fault, it's good to know that the problem is being fixed, and that we'll have the server back online at some point in the near future.

Thanks for your work!

Better late than never - good on you for being open about it and addressing it when you realised what was happening.

+1 for the reset, blocking fake keys and addition of new maps!!! If you put Warzone on there I'll totally be your friend.

I don't care much about the pirate random keys. IMHO that was even a bit useful for the mod - a possibility to try it out without buying Crysis Wars.

What I really want to see is the change in map rotation. DO WANT custom maps with downloader.

I think: "DO NEED" would be more appropriate. The small and repetitive choice of maps does a great deal in getting players of this great mod bored. There are new maps and ways to keep things interesting, but if they aren't explored, even a true fan will come to the point where he says "Better no game, than the 100th game within a week on the same map." - I myself started to think like this a while ago, and for the first time since I started playing I did not even boot up the mod for days.
The choice of maps does hurt the community, and since the XI-server is usually the populated one, it should try to actually be the superior server.

@ Ray:
Thanks for that clarification. I don't like the idea of hacked servers (although the MWLL-team is not really influenced by it, I guess). If somebody is not even willing to pay five bucks for his copy of Crysis, he can stay away from this game completely in my opinion. Others would be and were willing to build completely new PCs just so they could experience Mechwarrior again.

@ELH_Vivicector and thEClaw: the XI as well as the Huntress admin frequently stated, that certain map combinations can crash the server. Thus it's not that easy to simply include any map you want. Just look at the MechWars server. The TC server crashes relatively often. I think it has, or would have all TC maps in its rotation, plus a few custom maps. But you never get to see all of them in one session, since at some point it will crash and start at the beginning with TC_Kagoshima again. The current map rotation on XI is at least better than what we had in the past for a long time.

Thank you guys for the great responces. Really sorry for my mess up.

I am not sure if I am going to be banned from the forums, but I am taking notes of the feedbacks you are sharing and will add it.

I will be working on the server this week as in Prio #1, and see how it goes, after it is finished.

Right now the server is completely wiped and start with upload soon(to version CW 1.5/ MWLL 0.5.3.)

Edit: Yes Spooky, some maps can conflict each other but who knows with version 0.5.3.

I know about map conflicts problem. However, look at 7.WD TSA server. Works just fine with a good number of maps (at least when I was playing there). I would prefer to have a crashy server for some time, before the map compatibility logic won't be checked.

XRay... as one of the more populated servers, banning you would not help their mod in many fashions... I think you are probably safe :)

(snip)

Great news. I really like that you're still 110% involved with your server and interested in maintaining it. Other then Huntress and 1-2 others, XI is usually one of the more common servers I see people gravitate to. +1 to you for coming in and working to solve the problems that have been cropping up to try to maintain one of the better servers around since I started playing.

Also from me a 1+. I still like playing on your server, no matter what the problems are / were / have been. AND that you have changed the map rotation, too. It was really boring to play only the 3 maps all the time, as there are so much more maps available.

To stand up and admit your mistakes takes courage, so thats a +1 from me as well.
Its great to hear that you have taken the issue seriously an are working to get the server up to speed again.

I have to admit I have avoided the server partly due to the reputation it has gotten of late, but also because I have seen some things while playing that I did not like and some of it gave me the impression that some players were cheating in some way.
I'm not saying anyone has been cheating, just that some situations, not sure how to describe them, felt to me like they where not possible under ordinary circumstances and had me wondering.

Seeing that you are not working to get the server up and running the proper way again, I will be happy to return and play on it.
I only ask one thing, like so many others have done.
Please do try and get some more maps in the server rotation and preferably a mix of TSA and TC
I understand the issue with some map combinations crashing the server, but there should still be plenty of maps to choose from that dont do so.

Off the top of my head I can think of 2 maps that I miss playing on.
Those are Clearcut (TSA) and Death Valley (TC).
Any server with those in the rotation will have me coming back for more.

That said I hope you get the server fixed ASAP so we can all get back on and have fun playing.

Problem is in the Clearcut. After some playtime it becomes very laggy, performance drop is huge.  So probably we won't see it in rotation until that but is fixed.
