I need a new PC, any advice?
« on: November 01, 2016, 03:27:46 PM »
Hi folks,

The machine I am on is getting a bit old, Vista 64 is getting to where it refuses to update things and a couple of weeks ago I had a random bluescreen. I have got about 6 years out of this machine with no upgrades which isn't bad going, but its time to get a new one soon.

I don't need anything too astonishing - I am not looking to play twitch shooters with screaming 12 year olds at 60 fps.

What I would like to be able to do is play Deus Ex:Mankind Divided which this machine can't manage, and id like to play MWLL on a 3 monitor set up. I don't have a massive budget, im thinking around 550, so I might have to get some parts over time, like I think I want a gfx card along the lines of a GTX970 but I might have to make do with something not as nice until I can afford to upgrade.

I have been sniffing about on Novatech, PCSpecialist, Ebuyer and even places like Argos and PC World in case they have some stuff in the sales I can upgrade. It seems all the cool kids are using SSDs now. I will probably also have to fork out for an OS, is Windows 10 the only real option? I have a 1tb hdd on this machine but still have most of it free so I don't need a big HDD, I do in fact have a spare one although I am not sure it works : /

Any advice would be appreciated!

Build your own is my primary advice. Or splash our $700 or so for a medium spec gaming laptop on sale / open box. My Asus GL551 with a GTX960M runs most modern games on medium or high settings at 1080p and was $800 on sale a year ago.

For desktop, just build it from parts. Any decent modernish core i5, GTX960, and 8G ram is gonna be more than fast enough and you can build it for cheap-ish.  Buy last years, or two or three years ago tech.

Avoid AMD CPUs they're crap for gaming IMHO, esp in laptops.

Thanks for the reply, I got the feeling that AMD stuff wasn't quite good enough. I originally dismissed a gaming laptop but I will consider one if I can find it discounted as you suggest.

This: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0AY-00PU-00003 is basically the same laptop I game on. It can run OBS to record, and an MWLL server at the same time no sweat. It's currently $750.  It's about a match for my older desktop which has an i5 2400 and an AMD 7870 in it.

I personally don't agree with Sxoot's AMD cpu advice, I've had a 955 X4 for stonking ages and never encountered anything that's taxed it frankly. I think better advice would have been don't bother with gaming laptops.

As for the advise, yeah build your own. New egg is a decent source if you've got any septic mates that don't mind shipping it to you and lying about what's inside (I know all about that lovely import tax mate). I'd also say ditch vista (you absolute fapping nutcase) and torrent yourself a copy of 7 for the time being (anyone that suggests 8 or 10 is a prolapse daemon in disguise) and just roll with that for the time being.

w7_64bit (official image)
i5 (quad) any
business or gaming chip-set class MoBo, primary vendor to consider: gigabyte
VGA: GTX970 sounds promising, I would pick GTX750Ti or GTX950 for better value, lesser consumption and longer expected life-span?

This PC I am on right now runs Vista, I wouldn't put it on a new PC for anything. I intend to move this PC into my bedroom and put the new one where THIS on is, so I have two MWLL capable machines in my house to better convert people to it :D When that happens I will wipe it and probably get win 7 for it.

Is the consensus that Win 7 ultimate 64 bit is the OS to go for? I was going to get Win 10 but I hear a lot about it cross linking accounts automatically and spying on you, along with gigabytes of bloatware (as usual)

I don't really want the hassle of overseas shipping, I used to do it a lot when I imported models and airsoft stuff but I cba chasing parcels now, so its gonna be UK only now. Same with OS's, i'll just pay up for a proper one without worrying about getting cyberclap from torrent sites like friends of friends told me you get when you use those places.

I would really reconsider the oversea shipping element mate, you can save so, so much doing it that way. And if you've got a budget of 550 odd you'll be able to make that go a lot farther.

And as for Win 7 64, yes 100%, hell if you can pick up two cheap keys for it (or follow my previous suggestion, hell I need to do the same soon myself so I could even send you a copy in the post if you wanted) and get vista off that machine!

to You too Bill  ::)
(I'm not offended BTW)
It is 100% legal to use a "original image" for the first 45 days
it's called "trial period" around here (abroad), and can get money back if found not suitable :)
How about in the Empire?

It's what happens after that trial period that's the issue darling.

It's just given it's lack of official support anymore I'm loathed to suggest anyone actually pay for 7 when there's so many viable alternatives.

I also didn't say it to get under your skin Captain (and for the record I never have, we just have a habit of misunderstanding one another), I'm trying to offer the dude MY best advice, yours is likely different, but this is what's worked best for me so to speak.

I risk to sound funny as I might, but I agree wit You Bill
 :o
The 7 is EOL, and paying for an EOL is somewhat ... (IDK You find the word?)

But the dude was using Vista?

There should be some "limited licenses" of 7 around there?
It's EOL for crying out loud?

OTOH, if forced to 10, do try the UWT(Ultimate Windows Tweaker) from the Windows user club?  ;)

And You certainly know by now that I'm using GNU/Linux for anything but "testing games"  ::)
